Now, I bring up a question. Who is bringing up this debate, and why? Whoever they are, they must still be jet-lagged from trying to rack up airline miles to and from Beijing.

When I write of a team I write of togetherness.  Teams or true teams for that matter have one purpose and goal in mind.  They might be individual players but when it comes to the purpose they are on the same page and that shines in how they play.  The greatest example of this that I can think of is the original Dream Team that had Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Charles Barkley and others.  That team had 12 individual superstars who were the best the sport had ever seen.  Yet they played with one purpose and destroyed teams.  To watch them play together was a joy and something that I’m so glad I got to see.

For a team today just watch Duke play basketball.  I’m not talking this year alone, but every year.  They have a coach that won’t tolerate anything but players uniting as one for the same purpose and it is safe to say that he has mastered it.  Coach K gets 12 All-Americans to buy into one purpose and they play with that in mind.

What else comes to mind?  For me I think of all the times that I didn’t care at all if I made the next basket or not I just wanted to win.  It is something greater than ourselves.  It takes players who are willing to sacrifice what they want for the good of the group and they do it willingly.  They may hear all kinds of junk at home from parents but the best teams have players who are willing to sacrifice for the big picture and every coach needs them and should point them out to everyone.  Sacrifice is a big part of every team.

Lastly, what comes to mind is leadership.  Leadership to me is the most important part of teamwork.  This isn’t something that every player is capable of showing and it doesn’t always come from the player on the court but someone who is willing to always fight for the team in everything they do.  They are players who push the others while never having their effort questioned.  This is one that I learned too late and if I would’ve learned it earlier I would have a couple state championship rings right now.  True leaders are the coach on the floor and bring the best out of everyone.  When that comes together that truly cements the team.
