While every person likes to think they have what it takes to be an athlete, it’s not enough to just sign up for the team and show up for practice. If you’re going to invest all the time and effort into play, why be an average player? But not everyone is suited for excellence. Here are some characteristics you want to have before deciding if you want to make a commitment to investing your most valuable asset, time, into being a winning basketball player.

1. Competitive Nature

The type of person who will excel at basketball is a competitive person who feels a strong urge to be the best on the court. They will fight for rebounds, block shots, and fully invest themselves in each and every shot. If you do not beat up on yourself at least a little when you know you didn’t give it your all and failed, you may not be competitive enough.

2. Open to Coaching

If you cannot be coached, you will not succeed. You need to be open to being openly criticized and improve on weaknesses when they are pointed out. A good player knows they have a lot to learn, no matter how good they are, and leverages their coach for success.

          ]]>

3. An Obsession for Practice

Showing up for required practices and games is not enough—if you want to be mediocre, that is fine, but a winning player will practice whenever they can and put out the extra effort. Laser skills only come with this kind of practice. Winners are not simply born, and raw talent is never enough.

4. Strong Self Discipline

Self discipline goes beyond a commitment to practice—solid athletes will often need to control themselves where non-athletes do not have to. Life is full of distractions and alternate paths. Even young players will have to avoid making poor mistakes as simple as eating the wrong things or as complex as walking away from a fight at school. Pro athletes serve as an example and get lots of media attention and so must restrain themselves just as much.

5. The Ability to Face Challenges

Life is a constant challenge for an athlete. Besides mustering the strength to make the right choices and put in all the effort, you will constantly face opposition from both your own limitations and the people you play against. You have to get up when you fail and try again. You have to have the tenacity to play all the way to the last second, even when there is no way to win—this is what it means to give it your all.

Most importantly, can you do this all every day? The life of an athlete does not have an “off switch”—not if you want to be a true champion. You need to be willing to make a full-time commitment to practice and put in the extra time while others sleep and take a break. To defeat your own weaknesses and perfect your strengths.

It’s a commitment to a way of life, and not everyone is made for this.

Michael Jeffery Jordan is probably one of the most well known names in the world of basketball. He was born on February 17, 1963 in New York City. Jordan was responsible for making National Basketball Association or the NBA famous, during the 1980s and 1990s. He is the fourth child of his parents, James R. Jordan, Sr. and Deloris Jordan.

As he developed his interest for basketball the high school he went to wouldn;t let him play because of his height, a few months later he went from being 5’11″ to 6’3″. He then got a basketball scholarship in 1981 from the University of North Carolina because of his impressive records in school. In the 1982 NCAA Championship game he made the game winning jump shot, as which he says is the turning point in his career and what made him what he is today.

He then started his pro career in 1984 when he signed with the Chicago Bulls. When he turned pro he was soon a public icon and he was also on the cover of Sports Illustrated with the headline, “A Star Is Born”. He won the NBA championship from 1991 to 1993 and was then known as the best basketball player around. Although many people disliked him, many loved to see him dunk from the free throw line. As that is what he was most famous for doing in those times and what gave him the nickname of Air Jordan. This is also the name of the signature shoes that just about every kid wants.

In October 1993, he took a temporary leave to go play baseball but wasn’t really good at it at all and the only reason he even left basketball was because of the loss of his father, he joined back in 1995 again. He then won it again by winning the NBA championships from 1996 to 1998. He then took another break again in 1999 to return back again in 2001, but this time he would join the Washington Wizards. He played with the team till 2003.

Michael Jordan was part of two award winning gold medalist Olympic teams. His first team won the first gold medal in the 1984 Summer Olympics and the second one was in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. He set a record in NBA by making the highest career regular season scoring average of 30.1 points per game. He was the best that ever lived I think and he was my favorite player for a number of years until Carmelo Anthony and Labron James started to play in the NBA. He will always be remembered as making history and he will always be the one who first dunked from the free throw line. Even though he was a small guy once he grew fast into the NBA.

Become a professional basketball player is not easy, to be the first professional basketball player is more difficult, but Moses Malone has done this difficult thing. He is a former professional basketball player who spent time in both the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). In all, Malone played over 20 years for the two leagues and logged time with 10 different teams over that span of Ed Hardy.

Among his many other accomplishments, Moses Malone became the first professional basketball player to ever sign with a franchise directly out of high school when he signed with the ABA’s Utah Stars.

Over the course of his professional basketball career, Malone managed to average 20.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game and was the main 1982/83 NBA Champion Philadelphia 76ers. Malone was also named the NBA MVP for the 1982/83 season as well as when he was with the Houston Rockets during the 1978/79 season. Malone was named to the NBA all-star game 12 times during the period of his career, including 11 straight seasons from 1978 to 1989. Malone eventually retired after the 1994/95 season and was elected into the National Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.

          ]]>

His longest stay with any one team after Houston was with the Philadelphia 76ers. In the 1982/83 season he helped lead Philadelphia to an NBA Kids Nike Dunks Championship while he earned the NBA Finals MVP award and the league’s MVP award as Light Up Hats well. After the 1985/86 season, Malone was traded to the Washington Bullets where he played two seasons before signing with the Atlanta Hawks.

In his final season with Atlanta, the 1990/91 season, Malone’s scoring dropped precipitously as he averaged a career low 10.6 points per game thanks in large part to a move to the bench. Malone started just 15 of the 82 games he appeared in and it was initially in his career he averaged less than 13 points a game during the period of the season.

Before the 1991/92 season Malone signed with the Milwaukee Bucks and he seemed to be bouncing back as he started 77 of 82 games and Abercrombie And Fitch averaged 15.6 points per game. That season Dodgers Hats will be the last in which Malone started a game. Injuries and age saw him play in just 11 games for Milwaukee the following year and he averaged a new job low 4.5 points per contest.

Except Jordan, Malone is a legend in NBA, the best seller basketball jerseys of Malone is the witness. We are looking forwards to more Malone.

If you are curious about playing confident basketball, then you will in all probability find the following information provided in this article as astounding at the very least. What if you found out that a basketball player of any ability level can make impressive improvements to their abilities out on the court in just a few weeks, without your needing to get to the court for extra practicing and training.

If all that sounds unreal, well, i truly have shocking news for you – not that it is 100% real, it has a track record of helping thousands of young basketball players to improve their game skills by at least 30% in just a matter of few weeks. First, there is something you need to know – being a professional player, one that every coach dreams of, will require the skills and abilities necessary to quickly sum up what’s happening on court as well as the perception to sense what the other team might have in store.

My basic assumption is that you are interested about playing confident basketball, and no doubt have other ideas about what you want to achieve with basketball, but it is important for you to understand that it is possible to be able to unlock your potential to play like a professional – being able to think faster than others, make the right decisions under pressure, make accurate steals, and even accurate shots. Head basketball coaches and top trainers nationwide – from tennessee, connecticut, etc. – have experienced impressive results from this solution which trains basketball players – individuals and even whole teams – to make vast improvements in their game in just several weeks.

Even if you were simply interested about playing confident basketball, be aware that there is an effective training method now available which will quickly take your basketball intelligence to undreamed-of heights and make your basketball dreams start to come true, whether you’re hoping to be a better team player, a varsity stand-out, or perhaps getting into the university of your choice. Don’t believe it? Why don’t you check it yourself?

If you are looking for the perfect basketball training video , then you’ve come to the right place. We’re going to discuss, the good, and bad of Crossover Machine by John Ewing.

When I first bought the training video, I wasn’t sure it was meant for a me as a coach, let alone as a player. Frankly, I purchased it because I knew I could get my refund back if need be.

Then I watched it, and tried to apply what he teaches on the court. I found my skills to improve within a week.

Once I noticed myself playing better, I began teaching it to my players. As a coach, I’m very protective of my team. I wouldn’t allow the wrong basketball techniques to be taught period. I even stress the importance of running form.

          ]]>

So yes, I’m very strict. So I was very surprised that an Internet product was as thorough and complete! I mean this guy could have easily thrown something together – but he didn’t. As most of you know, that is rare in internet products.

On the contrary, the Crossover Machine has very cheesy music. Some of you may think that it’s not a big deal, and that’s fine. I’m just saying, that it can get a little annoying! BUT, it doesn’t get in the way of me learning ankle breaking moves.

Another bad thing about the Crossover Machine is the length of the videos. I mean, I was ready to go after the first lesson. I guess its because, John Ewing is a very thorough teacher. Either way it is a great product and I would recommend it for any basketball player on any level.

I have one player on my team who is very insecure and still growing as a basketball player. So I made sure to show him the video before I showed everyone else. He came to practice two weeks later a BRAND NEW player!

I’m still in shock at the effect the Crossover Machine has had on him. He is definitely more confident and is also up for a scholarship at Duke University. This DVD has changed his life, really.

I’m 35 and I honestly thought I knew everything there was to know about basketball skills and moves. I guess I was wrong. He did awesome at teaching me something new. Kudos to John and the Crossover Machine.

A basketball player should eat healthy not just for the game but for his overall health. But since the sport burns a lot of energy, players should eat more foods that contain the right nutrients that will give him the energy to sustain his fuel requirement – but still balanced to attain optimum use.

There are 2 basic food groups that a basketball player should eat: protein and carbohydrates.

Proteins – are the building blocks of the body which is responsible for paving the increase of strength and muscle mass through exercise. Protein is found in fish, eggs, dairy products, milk, and meat. There are also kinds of vegetables that are rich in protein. These are leguminous plants or plants which grow on the vine or climbing pea or bean such as peanuts, soya, and asparagus. Protein should supply 10 percent of our energy needs.

          ]]>

Carbohydrates – are essential for the functioning of our brain. Carbohydrates are stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen. They are often found in foods such as rice, bread, potatoes, pasta, fruits, honey, jam, and pulses. Carbohydrates should supply 50 percent of our energy needs however, since a basketball player requires more fuel to keep him in the game, some sports nutritionists require players to have 70 percent carbo diet.

As always, fat is needed but should be minimized.

Before the game…

Eat at least 1 hour before the game. This gives the body ample time to digest the food before using it during the game. It is suggested that the player should eat lots of carbohydrates to store energy.

During the game…

Players aren’t often seen eating during the game but most people don’t know about this: eating a bananna during the game helps players to replenish lost energy quickly. Regularly drinking fluid during the game helps the player to bring back the water he has lost from the game.

After the game…

After the game, the player should eat protein, then carbohydrates. This is because protein helps facilitates carbohydrate to replenish the storage chemical of the cell of the body called glycogen. Glycogen stores glucose, an important component in metabolism. Without these two, the body won’t regain the energy that is lost from the previous game and will contribute to mental and physical fatigue.

Take note that protein and carbohydrates aren’t the only requirements of a player. He should also exercise to help keep his body healthy and fit.

Becoming a great basketball player takes a lot of discipline, hard-work, practice, and patience. No one is born a elite basketball player. All the pros, from Magic Johnson to Larry Bird had to do a lot of work to get to where they’re at. With basketball more popular than ever before, the competition to play in high-school, to earn a college scholarship, or to play professional is intense.

Being a elite basketball player requires a mix of quickness, agility, strength, skill, speed and intelligence. Some good players might have one or two of these, but great players have all of them. The reason these are all important is because great players are balanced players, they don’t have major weaknesses.

Basketball players also need to work on all of their skills: scoring, shooting, defense, passing, rebounding, dribbling. These can all be developed by doing various drills. It is important to have a good training plan that is catered specifically to your strengths and weaknesses as a player. You should work with or hire a trainer to help put together an effective program.
Other than working on their skills, basketball players need to develop the other traits mentioned above. They should stretch to work on flexibility. They should have a weight lifting routine to develop strength. They should also incorporate agility, plyometrics, mobility, and speed work into their training program. As with the skill program, you should work with a trainer to build a good basketball training program (expert trainers will also cater the program for you, this is important especially if you are in grade school or high school and don’t have a lot of knowledge with safely lifting weights).

          ]]>

You can’t forget the importance of intelligence for a great basketball player. The great ones know how to react to a defender, to a teammate, or to a coach. You can develop basketball intelligence through watching basketball games on TV, discussions with coaches, reviewing films, talking to older player, and through just playing a lot of basketball.

There are a few other areas that are often forgotten when it comes to being a complete basketball player. You must take care of your body. This means get a lot of sleep, have correct nutrition, and utilize recovery workouts.

Basketball can take a lot of work and discipline, but it is also a lot of fun. I hope this gives you some good general guidelines to get on a path to becoming a great basketball player!

What Does It Take To Be A Pro Basketball Player….

By:Wesley Channels

Mental

In order to be successful in basketball you must have mental toughness. When no one else does, you must believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself you stop reading right now. The reason I said that is because there are many ups and downs in sports. No one plays perfect all of the time. It can be really easy to have a stretch in a game where everything goes wrong and then you start to think too much. That could cause more errors then you lose confidence all together. While it’s going on you won’t think everything’s ok and smile. Naturally you will feel down. A great way to get out of stretches where your confidence is down is to talk to family and friends. One thing I’ve found out, when your struggling family and friends are always positive. You don’t necessarily have to talk about sports with them but it’s good to talk to people that will support no matter if you’re winning or losing.

Hard Work

Working hard is an essential element in accomplishing a successful career. If you don’t work hard you will fail hard. There will be times during competition where your opponent will be just as skilled as you are. What will be the difference then? I’ll tell you that majority of the time the person that is more prepared and works harder will prevail. Most people don’t want to work hard when they don’t directly benefit from it. That’s the wrong mentality. If everyone thinks like that nothing will get accomplished. How will you be able to overcome tough obstacles if you never work hard and challenge yourself personally. Work hard at whatever you do!

          ]]>

Preparing

Next we will talk about preparation. This is very important. Preparation is what will give you the edge over opponents. It’s a great feeling going into games and you have prepared for everything that you’ll face. At that point you will execute at a way higher percentage than someone that hasn’t prepared. So I suggest paying attention to all the details while you compete. This way while you’re alone you will be able to work on things that are weaknesses in your game. Once you identify your weaknesses and work on them competition will become a lot easier.

Consistency

Consistency is key to improvement. If you work on something for a month you will gradually get better. That’s usually how it happens because it becomes a habit. Guess what will happen if you stop working on that same thing for two months. I would like to bet that you will not be able to perform the same way that you did at the end of the month of working on it. That’s why consistency is vital to getting to the next level of anything. When you’re working on something don’t burn yourself out. It’s important to work hard but not to the point where you’ll never want to do it again. Doing something on a regular basis is way better than doing something extremely well then not working on it again for months. Guess what the consistent person thatcontinued to build habits will pass the person that went on vacation. Be consistent when preparing for battle.

Know The Game

Know the game! That’s if you want to take a load off of yourself. Studying your craft is what separates good people from great. The reason people become great is because they know what to do at all times. They know how to turn mistakes into positives. By knowing the game you can make up for areas that you are weak in. If you would like to score more but your teammates never pass you the ball you won’t be able to score. A good person would just wait patiently and score whenever they got the ball. A great person will get rebounds to get the ball in scoring position or set a pick to make defenders concentrate on others consequently leaving them open with a scoring opportunity. That’s knowing the game. Study your opponents tendencies so that you’ll be one step ahead. Know the things that you could do to make you more of a factor. Know how things are suppose to be done. That’s knowing the game. That’s what will separate you from others!

The ability to correctly sense your opponent’s next move, or make fast and accurate steals or assists for example, is related to your cognitive skills, in other words, brain skills. Most people make the mistake of thinking of these skills as something athletes are born with, while in reality, they are not “born instincts,” but instead are brain skills you can acquire.

A team of professionals has produced a new and exciting tool which allows you to achieve that; it is founded on a video “game,” and the user simply has to “play” it for a half hour or less, just once or twice a week, for only several weeks – the results are stunning. Head coaches from across the usa (memphis, uconn, connecticut and others) have reported amazing results just after working with individuals as well as entire teams with this astounding application.

Before finding out more about how to be a professional basketball player, i recommend that you experiment with this unbelievable groundbreaking software. Thanks to this new program, the hope of one day making it to the nba for a wide range of school and college players has never been realer or more reachable; athletes who have tried it out reported an overall dramatic improvement after “training” with this software for less than 30 days.
