The Syracuse Orangemen are one of the perennial competitors for the NCAA Championship in NCAA Men’s basketball. Syracuse is a University out of Syracuse, NY that has taken part in Men’s basketball for more than 100 years. Over time this school has become the 5th winningest team in the history of the sport at the collegiate level.
The team has a winning tradition that in ways surpasses the accomplishments of just about any other team. It is a given that this team will be in contention year in and year out. For an incredible 39 straight seasons the team has managed to have a winning season. This has created an atmosphere that welcomes talented players to come and compete as they know that they will be seen by the scouts at the next level.
Much of the success of this team over the last 4 decades can be attributed to coaching legend Jim Boeheim. Boeheim has been coaching the Orangemen for an incredible 34 years. His resume since joining the team has been impeccable. In his 34 seasons he has managed to lead the team to win 20 games or more an incredible 32 times.
]]>
In the process of winning all of these games the team has really had a tremendous amount success in winning tournament and conference championships. Under the reigns of Boeheim the team has managed to win 8 conference championships and five more tournament championships in their conference. This success has materialized into 25 appearances in the NCAA tournament in the 34 years that he has coached the team.
Despite all of the wins and successes under the direction of Boeheim, the team was not able to bring their game to the next level. In 1987 the team made their first championship game under the direction of Boeheim. In this game they played Indiana. Unfortunately, Indiana was just too strong for the team and they lost in their attempt to become National Champions.
The Orangemen battled their way back to the title game in 1996, where they took on Kentucky. Kentucky was a star studded team with many professional prospects. Rick Pitino had the team under control and they took the Championship with a 76-67 victory over the Orangemen. Syracuse would have to wait longer for their chance at a title.
In 2003, the team was led by the superstar freshman Carmelo Anthony. Anthony was impressive during the season, but he really turned it on in the tournament. He, along with sidekicks Gerry McNamara and Hakim Warrick, led the team all the way to the championship game. Anthony played amazing basketball throughout the tournament and helped lead the team past Kansas to win the NCAA Tournament. Carmelo Anthony was named the MVP of the tournament and brought Jim Boeheim and Syracuse a championship.
The team lost Carmelo Anthony and has not since seen the same sort of success. They are still perennial contenders, but the team has not been able to reach the Elite 8 since the 2003 championship. The team now goes by the name “Orange” instead of “Orangemen” in order to incorporate the women’s sports as well.
The 1966 NCAA Tournament featured the best 22 teams in the nation. These teams would square off in single-elimination play in attempts to become the national champions of NCAA Men’s Basketball. The tournament took place in March, just as it does today. This is the reason why when we talk about NCAA Basketball we talk about “March Madness.”
One team stood out from the rest of the field this season. That team was Texas Western. This team was never famous for having a stunning basketball program, but they employed some recruiting tactics that were unheard of in the NCAA at that time.
While we think of basketball being a sport that features players of all races and skin colors, it was not always this way. Before 1966 there had never been a team that held a starting lineup that consisted only of African American basketball players. In fact, most teams across the nation did not even have African Americans on their team.
The coach for Texas Western decided to shake things up. He went on to recruit numerous black players to come and play for Texas Western. Their team went on to have an amazing season. They even went on to become the first team in history to start a lineup of all black players.

Texas Western would start things off by playing against Oklahoma City. This matchup would be a relatively easy game for Texas Western. They would come out on top with a 89-74 victory, advancing to take on Cincinnati.
This game against Cincinnati would present the first of many scares for Texas Western in the tournament. They would narrowly escape this game with a two point victory to advance to play Kansas. Kansas would not be any easier to beat though. The Jayhawks pressed Texas Western for all they had and the game would come down to the final seconds. Texas Western managed to walk out with a 1 point victory.
This victory would take Texas Western to the Final Four where they would take on Utah. Utah had one of the best players in the nation, Jerry Chambers. Chambers led all players in scoring for the tournament and would be named the tournament Most Valuable Player that year. Despite his best efforts, he would not be able to take out Texas Western. Texas Western would battle through the game and they would win by a score of 85-78.
This Texas Western team would defy all odds and advanced to take on the Kentucky Wildcats. The Wildcats were led by the legendary Adolph Rupp. Rupp was an amazing coach and was known for getting the most out of his players. However, he was playing against a Texas Western team that was not going to go down easily.
Texas Western managed to pull out a 72-65 victory. This win would give the school their first national championship in their history. This win would make history and paved the way for blacks to become such a huge part of collegiate and professional athletics in the world today.
The NCAA Basketball Tournament is among us. This tournament is a looking glass for human hope, excellence and positive social change. It is, in short, a microcosm of the human existence, with all of its exuberance, tragedy and triumph. The NCAA Basketball Tournament is American sports.
The excitement and tradition of “March Madness” or the NCAA Basketball Tournament as we know it today has been shaped by many significant events in NCAA tournament history: The first NCAA men’s basketball tournament was held in 1939 with the first NCAA tournament championship game held at Northwestern on March 27, 1939. Only eight teams competed in two regions. Oregon defeated Ohio State in the championship game, and the West region held a third-place game.
Although the NCAA basketball tournament now determines the national champion, that was not always the case. Until the 1950′s, the NIT was considered a more prestigious tournament than the NCAA basketball tournament, and teams often chose to enter the NIT and bypass the NCAA tourney. Because of this dichotomy, two of the best centers of the 1940′s never met in an NCAA basketball tournament. George Mikan’s DePaul team traditionally entered the NIT, while Bob Kurland’s of Oklahoma.
In 1973, with the championship game held on Monday night for the first time, UCLA behind Bill Walton’s 44 points on 21 of 22 shooting, won its seventh straight championship, defeating Memphis State. NC State, led by David Thompson, ends UCLA’s title run in 1974, defeating the Bruins in the national semifinals in double overtime.
The following year, the NCAA tournament expanded to 32 teams, and then allowed more than one school from each conference to participate. Prior to this ruling, the restriction prevented several great teams from competing in the tournament, including the 1974 Maryland team. They finished the season nationally ranked #4, yet lost the ACC Conference final game to top-ranked NC State prior to the start of the tournament. After that, the NCAA began to allow more than one team per conference to participate. In 1976, Bobby Knight’s Indiana Hoosier squad completed an undefeated season with a victory over Michigan in the championship game. The Hoosiers are the last team to go undefeated and win the title.

The tournament expanded to 40 teams in 1979, and teams were seeded for the first time. “Magic” Earvin Johnson leads Michigan State over Larry Bird and Indiana State to win the national championship. The game drew the attention of millions throughout the country; its 24.1 TV rating remains the highest ever for a college basketball game and is still considered one of the greatest match-ups in NCAA Tournament history.
Expansion followed in 1980 to 48 teams, and then in 1983, to 53 teams. In what many believe is the greatest Cinderella story in college basketball, North Carolina State’s Lorenzo Charles dunks the ball as time expires in the 1983 championship game to lead the Wolfpack to a 54-52 win over heavily favored Akeem Olajuwon and Houston. Perhaps no one figure in college basketball history more personified the spirit of March Madness than Coach Jim Valvano. His underdog North Carolina State Wolfpack did what many consider a miracle by making an incredible run through the 1983 Tournament. Culminating in the defeat of the highly touted “Phi Slamma Jamma” squad from the University of Houston, Valvano was rocketed into the media limelight and quickly became the symbol of exuberance and enthusiasm. He discovered soon afterward that he had bone cancer, and for a short time became a commentator for college basketball. Before his death at age 47, he was named the recipient of the Arthur Ashe award for courage at the first ESPN ESPY awards. It was at this time he announced the formation of the V Foundation for cancer research.
In 1985 the tournament expanded to 64 teams. A Villanova Wildcat team shot a 22 for 28 field goal percentage to defeat Patrick Ewing and defending champion Georgetown in the championship game. Villanova remains the lowest seed (#8) to win the championship. In 1991, Duke upset undefeated UNLV in the semifinals and went on to win the national championship. In 1997, Arizona, led by Mike Bibby, Jason Terry and Miles Simon, becomes the first school to defeat three #1 seeds en route to the national championship, winning against Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky.
The NCAA Tournament’s popularity has grown to rival that of the World Series, the Olympics and the Super Bowl. CBS Sports in 1999 negotiated an 11-year, billion agreement for television, radio, Internet, corporate marketing, licensing, publishing, home video and Hoop City rights for the Division I men’s basketball championship.
Today the NCAA basketball tournament is one of the most watched tournaments of the year. Always exciting you never really know who is going to end up on top!
No team making its first tournament appearance has come so close. No team since has reached it undefeated. Three decades have passed, and that game remains special. Magic and Michigan State were triumphant. Indiana State shot poorly, fell behind and never caught up that March night. The Bird-Johnson rivalry moved on the next year to rejuvenate the NBA. The obscure Sycamores against the burly Big Ten’s Spartans.
Until the Final Four, Bird refused almost all interview requests, in deference to his teammates, and no doubt because reporters were eager to ask about his father’s suicide and Larry’s divorce from high school sweetheart Jan Condra and a paternity suit over their daughter, Corrie, born in 1977. Successive two-point victories — 73-71 in the Midwest Regional final against Arkansas and 76-74 against DePaul — delivered the Sycamores to the national finale.

Sycamores marched through the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and deep into the NCAA Tournament. They were a phenomenon revealed. It was the Sycamores’ first national TV appearance. Indiana State beat Wichita State 109-84 in its regular season finale to go 26-0.
Students camped overnight outside the arena to get prime tickets. Terre Haute had caught the fever. Crowder incited home crowds by kicking the backboard, the net or the rim at the end of warm-ups. Michigan State had no monopoly on magic. A moment later, Webb missed the free throw, Miley rebounded and heaved to Heaton. He considered the time and circumstances and moved back upcourt, across halfcourt. Heaton wandered into a corner at the Indiana State end.
With Indiana State trailing with 3 seconds to play in an 83-81 game at New Mexico State and the Aggies’ Gary Webb about to shoot the potentially clinching, bonus-carrying free throw, the Sycamores huddled around Hodges during a timeout. Brad Miley, the defensive stopper and the only other returning starter. He predicted they would win the national championship. After watching Michigan State beat the Russian national team in a preseason exhibition, he told his teammates the Spartans were the best team in the country. Bird had an instinctive, almost mystical, grasp of basketball. Bird’s passion and toughness became contagions. Bird led by example and biting sarcasm. They found a big brother. All were looking for direction.
There were a half-dozen new transfers and a horde of role players. There were some big-city kids, but most of Indiana State’s roster came from Hoosier outposts such as Warsaw, French Lick, Rushville, Bedford, Cayuga and Clay City. CBS and ESPN plan 30th anniversary pieces on the season, the game and the rivalry, Bird-Magic, all of which are celebrated in the recently released book “When March Went Mad: The Game that Transformed Basketball,” by Sports Illustrated’s Seth Davis. The 1979 title game launched the NCAA Tournament to new heights. Its 24.1 Nielsen rating remains the highest for any game in basketball history, college or professional. Indiana State’s was a program that had advanced to the NCAA’s highest division in 1969.
The current junior point guard of Davidson, 20-year-old Stephen Curry, surpassed the team’s scoring record set by John Gerdy in 1979 in the game against Georgia Southern last Saturday. Curry needed 30 points to improve Gerdy’s record and at the end the junior point guard scored 34 points, finishing with a total record of 2,488 points. With this, Curry has become the best all-time scorer in Davidson history and one of the best players in the college basketball level. Curry was named the Cinderella man of last year’s NCAA tournament as he took Davidson to the Elite 8 for first time since 1969.
Curry started his basketball experience in high school playing for the Charlotte Christian School, were he was named all-state, all-conference, and MVP team as he scored over 1700 points during his time at that school. Curry also attended the Middle School at Queensway Christian School in Ontorio, Canada. During his time at Canada, Curry led his school team to an undefeated season and shot a 48% at the three point line. Despite of his success at the high school level, Curry didn’t have any major college’s scholarship offers; since many thought that maybe Curry couldn’t handle the physical scenery of the major conferences. However, he proved them wrong, as he has had three amazing seasons with Davidson College.

During his freshman year, Coach McKillop was impressed with his ability and considered that Curry was a really special player. During that season, Curry led the Southern Conference in scoring, averaging 21.5 points and having 4.6 rebounds per game. That freshman season, Curry took Davidson to the NCAA Tournament where they were the 13th seed but lost the first round against the University of Maryland 82-70. At the end of that season 2006-07, Curry received the award of the Conference Freshman of the Year, plus MVP tournament and other awards.
At his sophomore year, his impression in the conference and the league was more recognized, averaging 25.9 points per game and taking Davidson to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament, by beating well-recognized schools like Gonzaga, Georgetown University and Wisconsin, before loosing later against the actual champion Kansas with a score of 54-52. During these four games, Curry scored more than 30 points and his talent was acclaimed by a lot of followers. At the end of that season, people though that he would jump straight to the NBA, but instead he decided to stay in the college level and get more experience.
Currently in his junior year, Curry remains to be a key player for Davidson, averaging 29 points and 5.8 assists per game. And with a 24-6 overall record and a 17-2 conference record, Curry and his team expect to qualify for the NCAA tournament for a third time. For now Davidson has already qualified for the NIT Invitational and has captured the SoCon South Division title after having the best league overall record.
The next game of Davidson will be against Elon Phoenix, which will be the last game of the regular season and will be held on Monday March 2nd at Elon Phoenix University. Moreover, after that game, on Saturday March 7th, Davidson will play the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference tournament. The victory at this conference tournament would give Davidson a place to the NCAA tournament. We hope the best for this great point guard and his team the Davidson College, which we’ll be probably watching in the March Madness again this year.
Hasheem Thabeet and Jeff Adrien of the Huskies threw their arms into the air and gave a big smile to the gathered fans during the final few moments of the game on Saturday. This gesture was meant to tell the Irish fans that the game belonged to them and there was no hope for the Irish team.
The Huskies who were at 18-1, 71 forced the Notre Dame team who were 12-6, 3-4 to get their lowest season score so far of just a 33 % shooting. They also made use of a 13-1 run to turn the game in their favor.
Adrien shot his career high of 19 rebounds and also scored 12 points. Hasheem Thabeet scored 9 points as well as 11 rebounds and another 5 blocks. However, this wasn’t what made Thabeet the match-winner for his team. His superb blocking of the lane and tactics for making the rival team change their shots were the main reason that Notre Dame could not set a record in Saturday’s college basketball results.
]]>
A.J. Price of the Huskies, who was able to score a precious 13 points against the Irish basketball team, said that the reason why his team defeated their rivals was because they “did everything (Huskies) wanted to” and left no trick from defense to rebounds and stops to make sure their team secured a win.
Coach Jim Calhoun was overjoyed at his team’s brilliant performance on Saturday and said he could find no faults with his team’s play except perhaps an improvement in their free-throw shooting. Calhoun was not being unreasonable to say that as the Uconn could only shoot 15-30 off their free-throws.
He was all praise for Thabeet’s excellent play. It isn’t every day fans see really great players miss shots but Thabeet forced them to make errors from real close range which made all the difference for the Huskies.
Notre Dame’s star player Kyle McAlarney could not score off 15 consecutive shots despite getting three initial 3 pointers without making any errors. His final score was a disappointing 9 points.
Another Irish player, Luke Harangoy, was also unable to deliver for his team. He was only 10-of-23 from the field and finished off with 24 points. Harangoy has been in good form with this being the 11th consecutive game that he has scored a minimum of 20 points. As for the other Irish starters, they only had a shooting average of 21 % and could add 22 points.
This was a game the Irish would like to forget soon as this was a consecutive 3 straight in a period of 3 years and their first defeat in 3 years on home turf.

College sports are some of the most watched and enjoyed events in the entire sporting industry. People are passionate about their colleges, and there are few sports that have as much pride and traditions as these ones do. One school that is rich with history and tradition is that of the Pittsburgh Panthers and their men’s basketball team.
The men’s basketball team at the University of Pittsburgh is part of the NCAA Division 1 intercollegiate sports program and they compete in the Big East conference against many other top teams. The team is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and is often referred to as “Pitt”. The team plays all of their home games in the Peterson Events Center where they enjoy a huge fan base from the University.
Throughout their time in the division they have been able to get 15 selections from the first team All-American, as well as win two of the Helms Athletic Foundation National Championships. They have been in the Final Four once, and have appeared in the NCAA tournament 22 different times. They still have yet to clinch a national championship, but they usually recruit enough talent that they are a threat each and every year.
]]>
The men’s basketball team was first formed in 1905 and was coached by Benjamin Printz. There were two years around 1910 were the University did not actually have a team, but they have had one ever since. In the 1920′s, the team was coached by Henry “Doc” Carlson and he helped lead the team to their two national championships (before the NCAA). The team was then led by their all-star player Charlie Hyatt who has since been inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. These were some of the glory years for Pitt and continue to be looked upon fondly.
Over the next century, the team passed through a variety of different coaches and players including all-American Billy Knight who helped get the team to the Elite Eight in 1974 and an chance to compete in the NIT a year later.
In 1982, the team entered into the Big East conference. During this time, the team was led by Paul Evans as head coach and with the help of all-Americans Jerome Lane and Charles Smith they were able to capture the Big East Championship twice. Even with these great players, the team failed to meet expectations in the post season.
Most recently, the team is led by Jamie Dixon who has been the head coach since 2003. In 2009 the team was ranked as the number one time for a total of three weeks. During that season, the Pittsburgh Panthers also beat two other formerly number one ranked teams that season and became only the seventh team in NCAA history to do so. In 2010, the team continued their success and ended up losing in the second round to Xavier but still finished with a record of 25-9. Pitt fans are looking forward to this next season to see what Jamie Dixon can do with the newly recruited talent that they got over the summer.
Betting college sports is a lot easier when the statistics are available prior to the game. The best teams to wager on this season might surprise the average handicapper. The best three teams are the Golden Grizzlies, Patriots, and the Sycamores all recording 13 or more wins. That is Oakland University , George Mason, and Indiana State to the average fan. The Duquesne Dukes and Texas Longhorns have the best win percentages in Division I, winning over 80% of the time against the spread. The Ohio State Buckeyes are the only college team left that is undefeated and four other teams have one loss. If betting totals is what you enjoy, then the South Dakota State Jackrabbits are over machines.
They have played over the total 12 times out of 13 games. CS-Northridge can cause their own earthquake at times going over the total 83.3% of the time this season. If you are the type of bettor that backs the house and likes to take the under, take Eastern Washington , UTEP, and Kansas State . All three of these teams will have you asleep by halftime. The Eastern Washington Eagles rank 244th averaging 66 points and 274th in points allowed at 72.1 points a game. Since the VMI Keydets and the Lamar Cardinals do not count, Washington is the top scoring team in the nation at 87.1 points a game. Duke, Missouri , and BYU are close behind at approximately 85 points a game. Use the information given above and immediately start to win at betting sports.

March Madness countdown: Illinois’ rally from 15 down with four minutes left to stun Arizona in the 2005 Elite Eight. It all adds up to the second-best NCAA tournament game of the decade. Clicking the button will upgrade your browser. Especially given the way the team has played recently it was very therapeutic. If you’re a Syracuse fan you definitely should buy this item. Especially the ones who expected victory 15 years ago with the NBA roster filled 87-88 squad with Derrick Coleman, Rony Seikaly, Billy Owens, and Sherman Douglas. For example, the dvd never stated the “One More Year” campaign started by Syracuse students in an attempt to bring back Anthony for one more season. From his first game at Madison Square Garden, to the Final Four tournament, the dvd gives a strong document of the on-court happenings. It’s definitely a sign for things to come for Carmelo and the Nugget organization alike.

Was this review helpful to you. I always knew I was destined for DVD but never thought it would tie into the Orangemen. Being at the Final Four I missed the live telecast of the games but thought this captures everything perfectly. Great angles and new looks at plays that weren’t included in the original broadcast of the game. While not exactly what I expected this DVD does not disappoint. Coach Jim Boeheim’s third trip to the NCAA Championship game was a charm, as Anthony and fellow freshman Gerry McNamara, playing with a poise well beyond his years, led the Orangemen past the Jayhawks 81-78. Led by freshman sensation Carmelo Anthony, the hot-shooting Orangemen of Syracuse held off a late charge by Kansas to win the national title. Important: Your credit card will NOT be charged when you start your Free Trial or if you cancel during the trial period. Boeheim has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Social Science from Syracuse University.
Twelve Orangemen have been chosen in the first round of the NBA draft, the most recent being Carmelo Anthony in 2003. Syracuse University and the Orange basketball program under Boeheim’s tutelage have blossomed into a national power and contributed significantly to the NBA. Boeheim Court” became a reality when Syracuse, in 2002, elected to honor Boeheim by naming the basketball court at the Carrier Dome after him, perhaps the greatest honor a coach can receive. Witness: 13 seasons with at least 26 victories, twenty-five years of 20-win seasons, winning teams in 27 years at the Syracuse helm, most coaching victories in Big East Conference history, named Big East Coach of the Year three times. Performance, tenacity and the drive to perform at your best consistently are hallmarks of Boeheim’s strategy. If history is any indicator this season will be another success for Boeheim and the Orangemen, until 2003 when they brought home the first NCAA men’s basketball championship in Syracuse illustrious basketball history.
