Everyone needs encouragement, not just the little kids running around an intramural basketball court. The NBA recognizes different people, at different times, for many different reasons other than being the “best” or a world “champion”. Leading by example has been encouraged since the dawn of time; and it’s great to witness the NBA using their awards to reward such behavior.
There are many other basketball trophies and awards besides the sought after championship trophy that are handed out each year by the NBA to the many teams and individuals who also are deserving of them. This is important to point out because perhaps the fastest or highest achieving award does not need to always be presented at the end of every awards ceremony. Perhaps the best overall performance or best sportsmanship trophies should be because it is important that it stays fresh in the minds of all athletes, spectators, and fans that winning is not everything: it’s the qualities of the winner that is. Experts agree that basketball trophies, well all trophies, encourage us not just to perform at our very best across a broad range of endeavors, but they also inspire us to take action in a way that places emphasis on the importance of team spirit, community involvement, or giving something our all.
Besides the annual awards the professional basketball league takes inspiration to a whole new level with monthly and even weekly awards. There are monthly and weekly awards for not only players but the coaches as well. It is excellent that these players are made examples of throughout the season because it is more important to recognize the values that make athletes truly great all year round, not solely during the big or final game.
Take the Joe Dumars trophy for example; this basketball trophy is revered across the national basketball world as the peak of peer recognition for the winner. It rewards not only superb and consistent effort but it is even more highly regarded because the winner is considered to be one of the most respectful players throughout an entire season.
The Sportsmanship example is an important one because it highlights the fact that individual sporting abilities are not always the single most important factor in rewarding an athlete. In professional basketball this is awarded to the player who most “exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship on the court—ethical behavior, fair play and integrity” as voted by the NBA players.
Most champions of basketball usually acquire the ‘slam dunk’ of all trophies when it comes to the size and quality of their championship trophy. And yes, the winning team should get a great, big, shiny basketball trophy, but it is important to realize that basketball trophies are not just given to the winning basketball team. Even generally speaking there are plenty of other things that sport trophies represent besides winning. The National Basketball Association each year recognizes nearly two dozen individuals and teams besides the world champions with awards, besides inspiring millions of basketball players around the world.

Chicago Sun starting center Sylvia Fowles lead the way for the US basketball team scoring 23 points in the game 13 of whom in the third quarter. Fowles a product of the University of Connecticut in the NCAA basketball shot 9-for-11 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds, earning the MVP award in a game that had six former or current Huskies players on a U.S. team led by Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma and played about 30 miles south of the school’s campus. Defending National Champion Duke and the Purdue Boilermakers have opened as co-betting favorites in college basketball odds to win the 2010-11 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship. Duke had been down and out as a top tier national title contender until last year when they roared back to dominance. The Blue Devils are always a name brand team that attracts plenty of public attention and following and with their return to elite status will only serve to bring additional dollars flowing their way. Duke has opened at +450 in college basketball odds to win the NCAA championship at online sportsbooks. Purdue was poised to be a Final Four contender last year before injuries did them in after they won the Big Ten regular season title.
They were eliminated by Duke in the Sweet Sixteen round but have nearly all of their key components returning and should be among the top choices this autumn. The Boilermakers have opened at +450 as favorites in college basketball odds for the 2010-11 season. Kentucky was a +700 choice at online sportsbooks and will likely drop down as the public cannot resist a team loaded with “one and done” NBA material along with coach John Calipari. Kansas has opened at +1500 and is coming off a shocking loss to Northern Iowa in the “Big Dance” last year after being made a prohibitive favorite to make the Final Four. With coach Bill Self in charge the Jayhawks are always a solid bet to contend for the title. Bet Duke +450 as favorites in 2010-11 college basketball odds to win the NCAA championship with up to 260% in total bonuses and a 200% poker bonus.
North Carolina suffered a big fall last season as they had to settle for the NIT rather than the NCAA Tournament. Coach Roy Williams’ Tar Heels opened at +1600 as they face skepticism from the public. UCLA could make for a nice value play as a beaten favorite at +3000. The Bruins suffered an uncharacteristically bad season in which they finished under the .500 mark. With Ben Howland in control and with last year’s young team having been seasoned with experience the Bruins may offer board value that is normally not associated with them.
Who doesn’t love college basketball? Unlike college football, the basketball season ends with one of the best tournaments around. Known as March Madness, this exciting playoff event takes place throughout the entire month, with games happening every week and teams constantly being knocked out of play. The rounds go from the beginning of the tournament, to the Sweet Sixteen, Final Four then culminating in the championship game.
Given the excitement surrounding this final game, you may want to invite all your friends over and have one last party of the season. The NCAA basketball championship game is one of the most exciting events in any sports season, so throwing a proper party is a great way to commemorate this occasion. Fans also love getting involved in the tournament because they can pick their own brackets and predict who is going to come out on top. This has been a particularly exciting season, since so many teams have been upset, which means that few people have brackets that are still in tact. In light of this, you can make the whole party wager on the final game, which will increase some of the excitement in the game.
Here are some additional suggestions for throwing the ultimate championship game party:
-If you do not already have one, consider investing in an HD flat screen television. You should also make sure the television is mounted on a wall, since this makes it possible for everyone at your party to see the game. A high quality television makes a huge difference, especially when watching athletics, so don’t feel guilt about making this kind of large investment – it well be well worth it, all year round.
-Food is usually what makes or breaks a party. Ask your friends to bring some dishes, but you should be responsible for providing most of the fare. The best food for any game day party usually consist of lots of little snacks that can easily be eaten without utensils. Chips and dip are of course a great option, as well as things like sliders and mini grilled cheese sandwiches. It is easy to load up on greasy food, so be sure to have some healthy options like fruit salad or cut up veggies. While some of your guests may avoid them like the plague, others will appreciate that you provided some lighter alternatives.
-Aside from an advanced high definition television, you should also consider investing in satellite tv for the event. With satellite programming, you can get more coverage and commentary that will enhance the game watching experience. Most bars have satellite service, which makes them appealing to fans looking to games and watch their favorite teams. By installing the service in your home, you’ll turn your house into your very own bar and your partygoers will no doubt be impressed.
-Lastly, the most important part of any great party is just to create a fun, laid back environment where your friends can enjoy the final game of the season. Even if you do nothing to prepare, they will still appreciate the invitation and you will all have a great time rooting for your favorite team!

Have you heard of the Dallas Chaparrals or the San Antonio Gunslingers? If you are an NBA fan, then you probably know the San Antonio Spurs. However, you may not have heard of the Dallas Chaparrals. You are asking yourself what a chaparral is, right? A chaparral is a plant community of shrubs that exists in regions with hot and dry summers, and wet winters.
How are the Chaparrals and Spurs linked? While still in the ABA, the Dallas Chaparrals moved to San Antonio. Although the team’s name originally was to be the Gunslingers, the franchise’s big brass decided on “Spurs” instead. Albeit the Spurs were 3-for-3 in ABA playoff appearances, their greatest success has been in the NBA:
15 division champions
28 playoff appearances
10 Conference Finals
4 NBA Finals
4 NBA Championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007)
However, how did the Spurs fare during their premiere year (1973-1974)? They started well, winning their first game in the NBA, 121-118 over the Philadelphia 76ers. The Spurs finished the season with a 44-38 record. While the Spurs were the league’s top scorers (115 points-per game), they also had the worst defense (114 points-per-game). The saying that “defense wins championships” proved true, as the Boston Celtics swept the Spurs in the playoffs (2-0).
In 1999, the Spurs won their first NBA title. Due to lockout, they finished the regular season with a 37-13 record. In the NBA Finals, they demolished the New York Knicks (4-1).
Four years later, the Spurs won their second NBA title. After an outstanding 60-22 regular season, they later disposed of the New Jersey Nets in the NBA Championship (4-2).
The Spurs earned a third NBA crown in 2005. After racking up an impressive 59-23 record, they eventually knocked off the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals (4-3).
Then in 2007, the Spurs won their fourth and most recent NBA championship. They finished the season with an outstanding 58-24 record. In the Finals, the Spurs swept the Cleveland Cavaliers (4-0).
Throughout the San Antonio Spurs’ history, they have retired the jersey numbers of six players:
Sean Elliot – #32 (Forward): 1989-93, 1994-2001
George Gervin – #44 (Forward): 1973-1985
Avery Johnson – #6 (Guard): 1990-1993, 1994-2001
Johnny Moore – #0 (Guard): 1981-1988, 1989, 1990
David Robinson – #50 (Center): 1989-2003
James Silas – #13 (Guard): 1973-1981
In addition to the Spurs retiring George Gervin’s jersey number, he also is a member of the basketball Hall of Fame. Nicknamed “The Iceman,” the Phoenix Suns drafted him in 1974. Throughout his career, the league included Gervin on five All-NBA First Teams. He also played in nine NBA All-Star Games (1977-1985). As a culmination of his spectacular career, in 1996 Gervin was voted into the basketball Hall of Fame.
Since moving to San Antonio and joining the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs have had tremendous success. However, another NBA title is always their next goal. Use San Antonio Spurs merchandise to motivate the team as it gallops towards its destination! The San Antonio Spurs have won four NBA titles already. Their goal is always to win another championship.
