For fans, watching the game of basketball is exciting and entertaining. It can leave us wondering how the athletes do what they do and make the plays that they make. Surely many days and nights of practice have helped them hone their skills in order to become good players. What fans might not notice is the player’s best friend on the court, the backboard.
The backboard is the place of redemption during a game. If a player misses a shot, the backboard gives them another chance, if they can get the rebound. If a defensive move is missed, the backboard gives the opposing team the same opportunity. Rebounding is a vital part of the game, and the backboard is where it takes place.
Backboards range from very basic to high quality. For the top of the line ultimate backboard, a tempered glass backboard is the right choice. Tempered glass is used in the NCAA, NBA, and many high schools. Glass is the professional choice because it has the best ball reaction. When a ball rebounds off of glass, there are virtually no vibrations. This sends the ball back into play in a split second.

Glass backboards do not dent or scratch so there is no chance of a ball being delayed by hitting a dented area. Glass backboards are also easy to keep clean and attract little dust. Many tempered glass backboards are guaranteed to be shatter proof ensuring years of great game play and ball interaction. If you are looking for a professional style backboard, glass is the way to go.
Another choice for backboards is acrylic. Acrylic gives the look and feel of glass but is more economical. From a distance, most people cannot tell the difference between glass and acrylic backboards. But a skilled player will notice the difference when it comes to ball interaction. Though not as crisp as glass, acrylic is still a great choice for a competitive style backboard.
Steel and aluminum backboards are good for outdoor use. They are ideal materials for a community center or park. They can withstand a lot of play and are weather resistant. This makes them a good choice for basketball systems that won’t be locked up and can be accessed at all times. Both are sturdy and durable.
When deciding on the size of the backboard you want, take into consideration who will be playing. Regulation size used in high school, college, and competitively is 42″ x 72″. So if play will be by teens and adults the regulation size is best. If children and pre-teens will be playing, you can get a smaller size which will still teach them rebounding, but won’t be overwhelming.
Adding backboard padding can help protect your backboard from other equipment that may bump it. No point losing great play time to preventable injuries! This extra layer of protection can give you more use out of your backboard. Most padding comes in a variety of colors. This makes it easy to pick your favorite color or match your team colors.
Whenever I am speaking to a group of brand new or inexperienced youth basketball coaches, I will speak to the topic of “who is your mentor”. When a coach is attempting to put together a coaching plan of action, including how to teach, what to teach and when to teach it, I always point out that who they ask for advice should be of strategic importance to them.
When seeking investment advice, so often people will ask their neighbor, co-worker or a relative for some “how-to” or “what-to” type of advice. Does the person asking really know if the one being asked has investment success? If not, why would someone put their money on the line without having a mentor with a successful investment track record?
It’s similar in coaching. Who are you asking for advice? Have they done what you need to know and done it successfully? Just because someone has a couple of seasons of coaching, or even several years at a higher level, do they know how to teach, what to teach and when to teach it at the level you are working at?

A coach new to working with beginners needs a lot of patience and information. The first thing, and perhaps the most important factor, should be can that coach work with and teach children at this age level? Does this coach understand how to teach this age and the psychology involved in teaching, motivating or disciplining a child of this age?
Then, we need to have knowledge of what needs to be taught, in terms of the basics of basketball. We’re not talking here about what the pros are doing, the teams in the NCAA Final Four, or even your local high school team. These players, at these levels, are far beyond trying to figure out how to move correctly, how to pass, how to dribble, how to shoot, rebound, make cuts, screens, etc. They usually have become accomplished enough with these things or they wouldn’t be playing.
The coach of the beginner needs to know what to teach in a chronology that progresses the child from being lost to becoming newly accomplished at each skill. You don’t teach shooting or rebounding right out of the gate. Hence, a game plan of what skills to teach, when to teach them and how to teach them needs to be devised. It’s a road map for the coach. It’s lesson plans to get them from the first practice through the season, progressing through all the skills, so at the season’s end each player can execute enough skill to be able to play the game and have fun.
There are myriad selection of teaching books, videos, and coaching courses. There are mentoring programs available online. For example, there is a FREE program for any coach wishing to know how to teach dribbling, at www. sportslearningonline.com.
Youth basketball is for the youth. A child must be allowed to be a child. They should be allowed to have fun with learning and playing the game and experience the joy. A knowledgeable and prepared coach can make all the difference in the child’s experience.
Learning any sport takes some time and plenty of practice; but the best way to learn a sport is to get to know the basics first. In basketball there are not too many difficult things to remember. In fact, there are four basic ideas that you should familiarize yourself with. This will allow you to understand the game.
When you understand the game a little better you will be able to learn additional skills and moves more easily. Having a good understanding allows you to be able to pick up the game quickly because you will understand better why you need to move a certain way or what importance there is to each position.
Basketball Basic One: Time
Basketball games are either played in halves or quarters, depending on the league. The time of each half or quarter is dependent upon the league as well. The NBA plays in 12 minute quarters, college basketball is played in 30 minute halves and high school games are played in 8 minute quarters.
There is usually a fifteen minute break at half time. The clock stops when the ball is not in play. Also there are 5 minute overtime periods allowed, if needed. These rules about time are usually the same throughout all leagues.
Basketball Basic Two: Team
A basketball team has 12 players on the roster. Five players will be on the court during play. The coach can trade out players as needed, but only when the clock is stopped. There must be at least five players per team in order to play a regulation game.
Players wear a uniform that consists of shorts and a jersey. The uniform is usually loose fitting to allow for good movement. The jersey will have a number on the front and back. Some leagues may also include the last name on the jersey. The uniform is made in the color or colors of the team. Another important part of the uniform is a pair of sneakers that offer good ankle support.
Basketball Basic Three: Equipment
The game of basketball requires a hoop and a ball. Most league games also use a scoreboard. The hoop is usually at a height of 10 feet from the court and 4 feet from the baseline. The court is usually made of wood if it’s indoors. Outdoors courts are usually asphalt. The official regulations for balls are 28.5 inches in diameter with a weight of 20 ounces for women and 29.5 inches in diameter with a weight of 22 ounces for men.
Basketball Basic Four: Rules
The main goal of a basketball game is to score more points then the opposing team by making baskets. The rules surrounding how you do this are pretty straightforward.
- The ball must stay within the court at all times in order to be in play.
- Both feet have to be moving when dribbling.
- Your hand cannot go under the ball when dribbling.
- You can only stand still with the ball if you keep your feet planted. Once a foot steps you must dribble.
- The ball can not go back down the court once past half court.
- You can not dribble with both hands.
- The ball can not be caught when dribbling and held.
There are other rules, but these are the very basics. The more complex rules govern conduct and violations. Understanding these simple points is a great way to introduction to a really fun game.

The opponent will try to block the shot and may end up being thrown up or being knocked down to the floor.
However, during a jump shot, traveling violations may occur. That is when the player isn’t able to release the ball immediately before his feet get back to the ground.
The layup is a shooting style when the basketball player moves along the court and throws up the ball to the basket. Layup is a shooting style wherein the player doesn’t need to take a stationary position to throw the ball. The opponents are aiming to snatch the ball from the one holding it, so there is a struggle.

Characteristics of a good rebound player
When playing basketball, it is advised that the player be physically fit. The agility, strength, speed and overall endurance of the body are required for a player to be able to meet the physical challenges of the game, particularly in rebounding.

This position is said to provide your body with good overall balance. While standing inside the basketball court, practice having this physical balanced position. Take a good pivoting point. A solid pivot is attained when the ball of the foot is planted firmly and solidly on the floor of the court. If you have a good pivoting position, you can easily turn and run to the left to right, or forward or backward. Good pivoting is essential for the best defensive strategies in the game. Take quick pivots by planting the balls of your feet on the ground. Then, attain proper body balance. This way, you are sure to be ready for quick and abrupt pivot turns.
Footwork exercises
Aside from the usual footwork drills, there are also several exercises that are simple enough and will surely help improve your footwork for both defensive and offensive tasks in playing basketball.
Here are some of them.
As a form of exercise, bend the knees, take proper balance standing position by spreading the feet at shoulder width. Then, step sideways. Eventually, make the little steps either to the left or to the right turn into short runs. The sideway movements will help you attain good and firm footwork sideways. Hop with just one leg forward from tone side of the basketball court until you reach half of the court. Bring down the foot and use the other one as you hop forward to the other end of the court. This exercise targets the muscles of the thighs and knees, making up for firmer and stronger footwork. Regular jogging and running exercises are proven to be effective in improving the footwork of basketball players. In the morning, or whenever there is time, jog around or run. It would also be advisable if you use a thread mill.

To do the drill, first, stick a piece of the white athletic tape on the front side, the side facing you, of the rim of the hoop.
You see that white tape? That will be your target. Now start throwing the ball into the bucket by targeting the white athletic tape. You are hitting the bull’s eye when you are successfully hitting the target. This will train your eyesight and senses in shooting the ball.
The free throw drill
This shooting drill is aimed at establishing your concentration and consistency in shooting the ball during a free throw. The process may seem too easy and less complicated, but during actual games, players complain that their focus is disrupted because of too much noise and other distractions coming from the audience and from the excitement of the game itself.
To perform the free throw drill, you must get be on a basketball court. Stand on the free throw line and start shooting free throws. Dribble the basketball three times. As you dribble, say the word ‘dribble’.
After that, it is time to throw the ball into the hoop. Say ‘throw’ or ‘set’ or whatever word you want to use to associate with the activity. Before actually throwing the basketball, envision yourself all set to shoot the ball. Then, slowly raise your arms carrying the basketball, target the range and the rim and shoot.

Shoot the ball five times again, before pausing to close the eyes and picturing a good basketball throw in your mind. Throw the ball five times while the eyes are closed. Then throw the basketball successfully for five times after the closed-eyes drill.
Take note that your muscles are becoming more and more conditioned to successfully throwing the basketball. After some time, you can modify the drill and do it while walking or running on the basketball court.
Basketball is a very exciting sport. There are numerous basketball stars and icons that have swept the basketball viewing public throughout the years. Each basketball team is also equally popular because they are the cradle of the basketball superstars.
The game of basketball is definitely a team effort. Basketball isn’t played individually, but rather collectively. Each game is a team effort. In fact, in every game of basketball, no individual is declared the winner of the game. It is always the team.
Basketball players play the game excellently because they want to accrue scores not for themselves but for the team. However, there are awards and recognition given to players who have contributed greatly and accumulated points or scores throughout the game.
When fans rush to the basketball courts to flock basketball stars, they come to flock the team as well. A basketball superstar not only carries his name but also that of the team.
How are superstar basketball teams born? Well, a good track record is the key. And how is it attained? Simple: just by winning the most games.
The sweep
There are many basketball tournaments and conferences in every country. There are those events that are held annually for a regular interval. During these games, often, there are mainstay teams that regularly play at the basketball event.
When a team wins for two or more consecutive years, it is termed in sports and basketball lingo as a ‘sweep’. Thus, be it in the NBA or in whatever basketball tournament all over the world, the word ‘sweep’ is one of the sweetest and most sought-after terms in the ever-growing and exciting basketball vocabulary.
For a team to complete a sweep, it should consistently hold its excellence. Consistency is one of the hardest concepts in basketball because it is hard to assure that a team will win every game.
For sure, there are hundreds or thousands of potential basketball superstars that are given big breaks every season. The competition is really tough. That is why teams also often modify its lineup so it can get the best and possibly the greatest players around.
Team effort is also hard to keep. It entails that all the team’s members be cooperative enough to execute a good play strategy. That isn’t easy to accomplish considering the humongous egos and attitudes of basketball players.
For a team to make a sweep, it should strive harder to keep the good working and cooperative relationships between the team players. Failing to do so would result otherwise.
How a team could make a sweep
When you come to think of it, it would be easy to make a team run into a sweep in basketball tournaments. However, considering the individual efforts needed from each of the team players, it would be a truly big challenge to the coach and to the players as well. Remember, good working and personal relationships within the team shows in the play.
For a team to ensure a sweep, regular practices and rehearsals should be scheduled. The team should all be present during practices because that is the time each of them gets to bond. Rapport between the players is established.
Weaknesses and strengths of the players and team as a whole is also determined during practices. Thus, the training would be a good breeding ground to identify how each team player could greatly and significantly contribute to the welfare of the whole basketball team.
Consistency is essential. After winning a basketball game, the main goal of the team would then be to keep the winnings coming. When a team fails to keep its winning status, it fails to make a sweep, therefore, coming face to face with a nightmare.
The moral support from the fans and supporters also contribute well. Take note that most of the popular basketball teams do well in every game whenever they see the trooping fans cheer for them, as if the game is a popularity contest.
Team players are motivated whenever they see cheerful fans support them.
Basketball is a very exciting game indeed. It sure is hard for a team to make a sweep but the effort certainly makes up for added excitement.
