Basketball bears a distant resemblance to it’s early days, when the basketball net wasn’t a net at all but a peach basket. Apparently James Naismith the inventor of basketball, had a keen intuition for sports, but not quite so keen on physics. The obvious problem with the impromptu basketball net, was that there was no hole in the bottom for the basket ball to fall through. I sure we’ve all seen the commercial where one of the players has to climb up the ladder to retrieve the basketball after each score. The brilliant solution by Mr Naismith, was of course to cut a hole in the bottom of the basket. Seems like an obvious solution to those of us versed in the modern game of basketball, but wait the punch line is yet to come. The hole they cut, wasn’t big enough for the basketball to fall through. It was however, big enough for a person standing on the floor to poke a broom handle through and push the basketball ball back up through the top. Funny how the obvious is not always so obvious to those at the time. In spite of it’s somewhat comical beginnings, basketball has truly evolved to one of the premier sporting events in the world. I bet James would be thrilled to see his little game today. I hope.
Dusting Jack
Basketball had quite a few funny quirks along the road to success. One of the early interesting rules would have pretty hilarious consequences today. In today’s game of basketball, when a ball goes out of bounds, the last player to touch the basketball ball, is ruled to have been responsible for putting the ball out of play, and therefor his/her team loses possession of the ball. Things were a little different with the original basket rules. In the original game of basketball, the first player to retrieve a ball that had gone out of bounds, earned possession of the ball for his team. I suppose that makes sense when your first playing the game in a gymnasium, with one gym teacher, who doesn’t want to have to retrieve every out of bounds ball. Why don’t just let the players retrieve the basket balls. Ha! Could you imagine the melee that would occur in today’s professional games, if that was the rule. I can just see Kobe Bryant climbing over Jack Nicholson, spilling his drink, knocking his glasses all cock-eyed in a furiously desperate attempt to grab the loose ball before his opponent. Comical . . . yes. Hilarious . . . yes. Entertaining . . . yes. Likely to be adopted by the NBA . . . not frigging likely. We can always dream though.
Entertainment As Sport
Basketball certainly has to be one of the more successful forms of sports entertainment today. From all the pre-game theatrical dramatics (Ala the Micheal Jordan era Chicago Bulls) to the bad boys that seem to be prevalent in any sport, but especially basketball. In spite of the fact that most basketball games are decided in the last few minutes of play, it is truly an exciting game to watch and play. Especially if you get the opportunity to view a basketball game live. Highly recommended. Those guys make the television guys look like their moving in slow motion.
Professional basketball isn’t only about who runs faster or jumps higher, it is about making the right decisions on court based on the player’s game intelligence skills. An innovative technology claims to skyrocket the player’s basketball techniques and game intelligence by developing his or her brain-skills.
Acquiring superior basketball techniques requires at least some basic natural born talent and a daily hard work on court and lots of it! No matter how hard you practice, how good you memorize drills, moves and work on your techniques, it all comes to the point where you need to execute it all on court, under intense pressure with minimum court time.
]]>
Basketball dribbling, shooting, moving on court while “reading” the game and executing it all precisely and effectively, is about a player’s brain-skills and game intelligence.
A team of cognitive “brain-training” scientists claim to have identified the brain-functions responsible for those skills; together with a team of leading basketball coaches they developed a unique software system that enables any basketball player, at any level, to dramatically improve his or her basketball techniques and game intelligence.
Basketball Coaching Video Game
The system was designed to feel and look like a video game, while the player is shooting spaceships and chasing the “bad guys”, it stimulates the exact brain functions required of a basketball player on court, the system analyzes the player’s performance, it spots weak points or setbacks, finally customizing a training program, tailor-made to fit that individual player.
After 6-8 weeks of “brain-training”, the player unconsciously and surprisingly executes much better on court in the areas of: decision making under pressure, improved shot selection, enhanced movement anticipation, heightened court sense and pattern recognition.
Do you believe that you were born to fulfill your destiny as a basketball star? And that most of your time in high school or collage was spent in trainings and basketball games? Then you are on step one.
Many films on high school basketball have been produced, in which lead characters gain college scholarship. This isn’t just a Hollywood make-believe event. It happens to an unknown athlete in your school and it could happen to you.
Make your self known
As a high school or college basketball player, you should be focused on being noticed not only by the swooning girls but also, your basketball coach. He may be able to make the recommendations that you need to land a college basketball scholarship. Although this isn’t a guarantee, it pays to do well in every training or game and to stand out.
Making your self known by coaches of different schools other than yours high school is highly advised. Unless you play like Michael Jordan, then you have to be able to sell your skills to these coaches. Make them notice you. Don’t wait for any college basketball coach to recruit you. You must confidently submit a resume or profile of your personal basketball history and let your track record be tangible proof for them.
Good grades from classwork are one of the most important things that any high school basketball player need. Although basketball may not be linked to language proficiency or mathematics, the fact remains that most colleges that offer basketball scholarships will want their applicants to have outstanding grades.
]]>
These grades tend to prove that despite the rigors of trainings and games, you as a player remain disciplined to finish other tasks. The grades will also reflect how well you balance your time on different activities. So the next time you start thinking that your English grade means nothing to your college basketball scholarship, think again.
Commonly, in the United States, right after high school graduation is when athletic scholarship applications are best done. The standing rule for age is 18-24 years old. The great news in the U.S. is that, there are a booming number of colleges and universities that offer scholarships. You have a lot of choices so take your pick and start sending your resume to some of the colleges that you like.
Participating in ranking tournaments
Give each one of these games your best shot when participating in ranking tournaments. When you are ranked high, of course, the chances of getting a good scholarship will be greater compared with mediocrity in regional or national ranking.
You should be aware that processes of recruitment are very sophisticated. You just don’t go about telling every college basketball coach you meet that you can play the game. Know which colleges you want and be able to impress that you can play basketball on a non-neophyte level. Promote your skills and sell your talents.
Behave yourself
Basketball coaches want to work with an individual who has a clean track record and whom they can mold into the athlete that they envision. If you have an unclean record, chances are, coaches might shun away from meeting you.
Your credentials
When you have finally decided which college will be able to offer you the best scholarship, begin processing not just your resume but also other important credentials such as transcript, your ACT and SAT scores, samples of completed work (in short, your portfolio). These are just some of the necessities so it’s important for you to ask your chosen college’s specific requirements. There are, of course, different requirements for different colleges.
There are many hurdles to overcome to achieve an athletic scholarship. The requirements include a lot of physical and mental preparation. If you believe you have what it takes to succeed, then you have already succeeded.

It all started with a child’s game that the inventor, Dr. James Naismith used to play outside his schoolhouse when he was younger. This game was called duck-on-a-rock, it aimed to knock the duck off the rock by tossing another rock against it.
This then gave Dr. Naismith a concept of a game which he introduced to the students of YMCA Training School in 1891. Due to the cold weather, the trainees of the School for Christian Workers needed a game that could be played indoors and one that wouldn’t use much strength. He then conceptualized a ball game that uses two baskets as goals with both teams competing for the most number of shots.
Apart from the game itself, he also outlined the first 13 rules on playing the game which covers the guidelines, distinction of violations and fouls, and the roles of both umpires and referees, including the duration of each game.
]]>
Thus, these events led to the actual birth of the game in December 21, 1881 when it was first played after Dr. Luther Gulick, the head of physical education at the YMCA, gave a two-week allowance for his employee to create a new game.
While the game would be developed in the following years, the students of the YMCA Training School loved it initially. It was even said that Dr. Naismith had a difficult time convincing his students to leave the game after each session.
The game went on to be played in the Olympics in Berlin, Germany where the USA Team beat the Canadian team with a score of 19-8. At this time, there were 22 nations that joined the competition. By 1976, Women’s Basketball was introduced into the Olympics.
On August 3, 1949 in New York City, the National Basketball Association was formed. But prior to that were the creations of National Basketball League (NBL) in 1937 and Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1946. The NBA now serves as the largest group in the history of basketball. There are only two leagues left which retained their names since the formation of NBA, the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics.
The first women’s collegiate basketball was splayed on April 4, 1896 in San Francisco’s Page Street Armory where Cal and Stanford met. Unlike the physical and strenuous game we now see in WNBA, the women basketball teams back in 1896 retained their ladylike approach in the game and rules were even modified to accommodate this natural tendency. Stanford then won with a 2-1 score against Cal team.
These events led to the popularity of basketball in our time.
The fanatics of the game are usually left in great amazement as they see their favored players dunking the ball in the hoop. In most cases though, basketball dunking stirs the excitement of the crowd. When one of the players dunks the ball, the audience is left to nothing but roaring happily. There is no wonder that today’s best basketball players and other budding executioners of the game are into the thought of perfecting their basketball dunking. Basketball dunking is a skill that is worth showing off.
A slam dunk is nonetheless an awesome shot. To be able to deliver a spotless slam dunk means being capable of jumping higher into the air, releasing enough power to drive the ball with either one or both of the hands, and finally shooting it. Meanwhile while everything sounds pleasing, the road to basketball dunking perfection isn’t easy. It requires severe discipline on the part of the player. Basketball dunking not only uses the arms but the legs as well. In short, one has to work on the coordination of his leg muscles.
]]>
Here are some significant pointers to keep in mind as you attempt to work on your basketball dunking prowess:
Be proficient in jumping. While this may be a bit of an elementary basic, it necessarily means that with jumping comes strength and agility particularly with the leg muscles. Jumping is a skill or movement which obviously needs the application of force from the feet. If there is less force, the jump could be very low.
Attend to your leg exercises. You don’t have to keep yourself in the gym since leg exercises can be done outdoors. How do you do it then? First, firmly stand on the ground. Alternately stand putting your weight on your toes, putting them down, and then repeat the steps. The next procedure is for you to jump both up and down without going really high. You could jog around an area if your time allows you to as this will prompt an efficient cardiovascular activity. Then you could opt for jumping rope and always stretch the leg muscles. These activities will not only relax your legs but will also enhance the blood circulation in that area.
Use your best pair of shoes when playing. Always seek comfortable shoes since they boost your confidence, inspiration, performance, and agility.
Perfecting a basketball dunk also relies on your current mood. It is important that during the game, you instill happy thoughts in your mind. Now, are you ready to set the crowd in a heap of excitement with your basketball dunking exhibitions?
How do you get massive exposure and get some of the top
college and pro recruits beating down your door and Filling
your mailbox full of scholarships and contracts?
Great question. And It’s not as hard as you think!
I have always said and believed that the Greatest basketball
player in the world will do nothing unless the right people, and I mean the right people know of him.
You see,one of the most important aspects of basketball
( exposure) has been completely neglected for centuries…
THEY ALWAYS SAY JUST GO play on a Travel Team and you will
get noticed…
you have a better shot at making a full court,
behind the back, with a blind fold shoot!
While travel teams will help, most of the scouts that
attend the games already have an idea of who they are looking for,
most of the time they are there because t hey know one or two
of the players and are just checking up on how there ” merchandise”
is doing.
I have a better, more productive way of getting massive exposure
and having your name spreading like wild fire to thousands of
coaches, scouts and teams.
Don’t believe me?
See what this baller had to say:
First A College Scholarship and Now a Pro Contract!
“Hey Rali,Judson Stubbs
Professional Basketball Player
Former Division 1 All star
I just wanted to say Thank you so much for Introducing
me to the Go Basketball Pro System and allowing for my
basketball Dreams To come True.
You First helped me get a Division 1 College Basketball
Scholarship to TCU which I can Not Thank you Enough. But
now You have Helped me Get A Pro Contact Over In Brazil.
]]>
Again Thank you so much….
Your basketball system is so pro found and effective I
can NOT BELIEVE you have even Shared the secrets you posse
and allow it to be so easy to get your remarkable system.
I know that I am well on my way to getting in the NBA and
to be honest I owe it all to you.
Without your knowledge and expertise I would Just Be
another regular average Basketball Player.
Hope you are having great success, I will see you in A
few Months when I Come back down to Miami.
Amazing Isn’t it!
This baller came form a No NAME Community College down in
Miami, and I helped Him get a D-1 Scholarship To TCU, and
then I Got him a Pro Contract Over In Brazil…
Now I know Brazil is not the NBA, But he is playing pro ball
and getting paid for something he loves…
Plus, now he has an opportunity to get his name out there
and Participate In NBA Workouts…
I know what your next question Is….
How Did I Do It? Whats my secret?
You Want to Know My secret?
Okay Here it is….
One of the easiest, but most effective ways you can get
scouts and recruits Knowing of you and attending all your
games is by contacting them…
That’s’ Right, contacting them.
But there is a system you have to follow…
Here is the system: First you have to really know what your game
is like, what you do great and what you do horrible…
What is your niche…
Ask your coach, other coaches, teammates, parents, get
as much info as you cane…
Then you need to do some research…
Go on the Web at start looking at different schools and teams, see what there roster is like, and see all the years the
players have been there…
This is a great way for you to secretively find out what
that team is looking for, and what they are interested in…
let’s use an example…
If you are a point guard, that is small, but has a lot of skills
like you can really shoot the ball, dribble under control and pressure
and have a low turnover to assist ratio, and you find a team
where their starting point guard is in his last year, and they
had a high average of turnovers last year, and their reserve point guard
isn’t all that good…
Then you found a Goldmine…
You are exactly what that team needs and is looking for!
But now if that team has three guards, that were High school
All Americans, and none of them are higher then sophomores..
Then you better move on… they already have your spot filled!
This is what I call being Pro Active… It is the difference between
PLAYING HARD AN PLAYING SMART…
It is also the difference between most of the players that get scholarships, and most of the ones that end up Sitting at home,
watching ESPN…
So now you know that that team need someone like you,
now you can begin contacting them.
Stay tuned for Part 2 Of this Course which
Will Be Next Week.
Start researching some teams, and start asking coaches,
trainers, players and parents what they think of you game
so you can get progress report
to use when researching those teams..
Your Coach

Every basketball team’s goal is to improve their skills or their game and play well. It is important that the team has confidence before they set foot on the floor or court. But how can the team acheive confidence? The answer is preparation. Through preparation, the team gains confidence. The team can prepare through practice. Practicing skills and team plays can make the team confident to face any situation that they should encounter in an actual game.
In making a basketball team play you need a diagram to represent the court or floor, some chips or a marker to place the positions of the players, who are given a specific number or color of chips. This is used to explain the flow of the play so the team players know how to act or where to go during specific team plays. Extensive knowledge of the game itself, tactics and rules is also essential. In order to facilitate the discussion, everyone concerned should bear in mind that the strong side means that it is the side of the court where the basketball is and the weaker side is the one without the basketball.
This is where names such as John Stockton, Jason Kidd and Steve Nash come into play. These are some of the most skilled basketball players in terms of playmaking. While the coach is in charge of teaching how plays should be made, the point guard has the primary task to make sure that these are properly executed during the game.
Offensive Plays are used when the team has the possession of the ball. The focus of this play is to score. Plays of this kind increase the chances of the players, such as the point guard, to make the basket and score. Examples of this play are 1-3-1 offensive plays, 1-4 formation offensive plays, zone formation offensive plays, triangle offense formation and man to man offense.
]]>
The offensive team that will do these offensive plays is composed of five players with corresponding titles and numbers: The point guard (1), the shooting guard (2), the forward guard (3), the power guard (4) and the center (5). The point guard directs the offensive play on the court. The shooting guard is the best outside shooter and usually takes the shot that allows the basketball to make the basket, he should know the right timing for scoring. The small forward guard moves quickly and effectively and keeps the ball away from the defensive team. They can also drive to take a shot or do jump shots anywhere. The power forward is the best inside shooter, which shoots well from underneath the basket or on its corners. The center is the tallest member of the team and does the rebounds and plays with his back almost facing the basket all the time.
Defensive plays are used by the team when they prevent the ball from making the basket by guarding the basket themselves and the players as well so that scoring won’t be successful. The focus of this play is to prevent the other team from scoring by trying to steal the ball or disrupting the flow of play of the team that has ball possession.
Plays of this kind puts pressure on the players who have ball possession making them vulnerable. The defending team players use this situation to their advantage and stop the ball from making it to the basket or making it possible to steal the ball from their hands. Examples of this play are the zone defense and the 2-3 zone defense.
Team players should possess characteristics when they are on the defensive play. Quickness is a quality that can be applied to the hands and feet. Swift movements are necessary to help defensive steal the ball from the offensive team. Strong legs can be helpful in doing repetitive quick jumps. Focus on the game is necessary and they should always be aware since they will read and observe the offensive play so they can use it to their advantage.
This will help the defensive team members to react quickly and appropriately. Defensive team members should be flexible and able to do different kinds of defensive plays depending on the situation.
They should be able to apply defensive skills on both weak and strong sides of the court. Understanding of the strategies and concepts of the game helps them make right decisions based on the situation. Good communication is essential for teamwork because if they work together on the floor, the offensive team will have a difficult time scoring.
Practicing the basic basketball skills as well as the offensive and defensive plays helps a team prepare for a game. When you are prepared to face the battle during a basketball game, worries can be set aside and confidence is gained. These are the secrets to playing a good game and playing it right. Winning and being a champion is possible if these things are kept in mind.
The subject of how to shoot a basketball is one that is close to many people’s hearts. “Within that ring lies greatness”, that’s probably what Shakespeare would have had to say on the subject! (If he’d been alive) and even in the modern era it is not only great playwrights that worry about how to shoot a basketball. That is the job of most of us who have ever messed about shooting some hoops, and dreamed of being Michael Jordan. This thinking leads to good challenges on the basketball court to improve, and an ongoing effort to improve our shooting technique and other factors that are directly under our control. In this article, I am going to look at some of the factors that influence how to shoot a basketball and how you can go about improving your basketball game in a gradual and predictable way.
The first factor to consider in it how to shoot a basketball is your foot placement. The reason this is paramount is because ultimately everything ties in to your body balance and how your body is centred. Because it is that balance, which properly allows you to get into the correct posture and position to shoot the ball effectively. In practice, what this means, is that you should have your feet placed in a stable manner, and most of your body parts bent prior to shooting the basketball. So for example, you would be flexed at the knees, with pressure evenly spread on your ankles, and your wrist bent slightly to allow you to get maximum thrust on the basketball before you propel it forwards.
The next factor to consider is how your eyes are. You need to make sure that you are focusing clearly on the basketball ring and not on the basketball itself. This is a mistake that beginners often make when they first start out with basketball, in that they are so focused on their own body position that they tend to lose sight of the main goal, which is obviously to score a basket. One aspect of this though that does differ between different teaching styles, is which part of the basket rim you should focus on. Some say it is the most forward part of the rim you should focus on, some say the backboard just above the rim, and some even say you should focus on the left or the right of the rim depending on which of your eyes is dominant when taking the basketball shot. In practice, this is quite a difficult thing to consider, and so try the four types out and then choose which ever method works best for you.
The third factor, that we are going to consider in this article is your hand position, and how you hold the basketball. This really is a critical factor. If you hold the basketball too high, then you won’t get enough leverage on it, and you won’t be able to get the correct speed or spin, in order to give the basketball the correct momentum to go in the right place. But too low, and you will find that you don’t have enough control over it. Basically, you need to experiment, find a hand grip position that allows you to have sufficient control over the basketball, but at the same time, allows you to have the dexterity of touch, to enable you to have the feel to make the shot.
If you examine these three steps. Take action and practice, then you will be well on the path to mastering the beautiful game! To discover more basketball tips, tricks and strategies. Visit the links below for up-to-date basketball information and techniques.

Established in 1933, the Southeastern Conference has boosted an incredible number of championship teams and athletes. When it comes to athletic success, SEC Basketball has led the way in the conference for years. Indeed, SEC basketball is comprised of some of the most successful teams in the United States.
The SEC basketball teams (that have enjoyed nationwide success) are from the following universities that make up the conference:
l Alabama
l Arkansas
l Auburn
l Florida
l Georgia
l Kentucky
l LSU
l Ole Miss
l Mississippi State
l South Carolina
l Tennessee – M
l Tennessee – W
l Vanderbilt
Most recently, six men’s Southeastern Conference basketball teams were invited to play in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. SEC basketball has racked up solid success at the men’s national tournament. For example, the conference’s basketball teams have reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the last 19 years. It is rare for an intercollegiate conference to enjoy this level of success.
]]>
Not only are men’s SEC basketball teams enjoying amazing success but women’s teams are at the top of the list nationally as well. Five women’s Southeastern Conference basketball teams were invited to the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Two of those teams reached the final four. And, in 2007 and 2008, the national champion in women’s basketball was a SEC basketball team – Tennessee.
In addition to NCAA championship success the SEC basketball program also has obtained a number of significant records. For example, the conference is the only one in the country to have all of its teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 since 2000. Other important records have also been set by SEC basketball.
As is the case in recent years, a good percentage of the SEC basketball teams are ranked in the top 25 by the NCAA. Moreover, a good number of the conference’s basketball players are also ranked amongst the top collegiate players in the United States today. (As an aside, a notable number of SEC basketball players end up being recruited by professional teams when their college days come to an end.)
The SEC basketball programs at the universities of the conference all adhere to a long established mission statement:
“The purpose of the Southeastern Conference is to assist its member institutions in the maintenance of programs of intercollegiate athletics which are compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports.”
Not only have SEC basketball athletes excelled on the court but they have performed dynamically in the academic arena as well. Indeed, a good percentage of both the men’s and women’s conference basketball teams have garnered academic as well as athletic recognition and honors. As the mission statement of the conference sets forth, a strong commitment is made to ensure that student athletes enjoy success both on the court and in the classroom.
Analysts predict that SEC basketball will remain at the top of the game into the future. In fact, these experts believe that the conference’s men’s and women’s teams should continue to garner top slots in the NCAA Tournament well into the coming decade.

Ettore Messina has his own blog at www.sports.ru and one at www.nikebasketball.com He is considered the best basketball coach in europe since Mike D’Antoni and rumored to be in line for the Toronto Raptor job in the NBA.
Coach Messina believes that “No Complacency” is how he has won so much. Most people call his teams “unstoppable”. He tends to focus on their weaknesses and not strengths. It’s what he believes makes a good team into a great team. He is always looking for the right angle, right timing, right form. It’s the little things that matter to him. After detail then comes focus, He isn’t afraid of long practices, but tries to keep them about two hours. ”We play like we practice” is his motto. His team is always even and not too high or too low. ”It’s all about the NEXT GAME” is what they focus on. Never too far down the path.
