In this article today I’d like to discuss several tips, tricks, and tactics that almost everybody can use to become a basketball star no matter what.
Basketball is the greatest game ever invented, without a doubt. Most people believe otherwise but the fact of the matter is that it doesn’t matter how tall you are and it doesn’t matter how athletic you are and it doesn’t matter how coordinated you are, if you follow the tips in this article you can become a basketball star no matter what; as long as you have the discipline.
So what exactly does it take to become a basketball star? It’s not easy, but it may be easier than you think. You basically have to focus on several main areas. Strength, speed, stamina, and shooting or the four s’s as I call them.
It doesn’t matter what sport you’re playing, you need strength in order to succeed and basketball is no different. If you want to be a basketball star you should develop a daily weightlifting routine to focus on your shoulders, arms, upper and lower back, thighs, legs, and abs.
]]>
Basketball is a very quick game and therefore you have to build up your speed. Speed is essential for defense and very necessary for offense as well and anything you can do to increase your speed is beneficial. There are a number of different sprints that you can run to help build up your speed and footwork but I’m going to focus more on this in the next section when I talk about stamina.
Stamina is probably one of the most important things to work on because basketball is an exhausting game where you are running up and down the court practically nonstop. The person who gets tired first loses, it can be as simple as that. It is essential that you build up your stamina and there’s only one way to do that, through long-distance running.
You should begin each day by running 3 to 5 miles. Do this before school even starts during the off-season. If you do this I guarantee you will run rings around absolutely everybody else in the state. It will also help build up your speed as well, allowing you to kill two birds with one stone.
Finally you have got to focus on shooting because scoring is the name of the game. The best shooters in the NBA practice 8 to 10 hours a day in the off-season and often come in several hours early before the game starts to warm up. As a high school student you don’t have that much free time because you have school but you can easily get in for hours of shooting practice everyday after school.
Create a focused shooting practice regime were you do the same thing every day, take the same shots from the same positions over and over and over until it becomes automatic. Make 10 baskets in a row from all the major areas on the court everyday.
So there you have several very simple tips that anybody can do to become a basketball star. It’s an incredible amount of hard work but when you break it down into the four areas I discussed, it’s really not all that difficult it just takes discipline. Do you have the discipline?
The Syracuse Orangemen are one of the perennial competitors for the NCAA Championship in NCAA Men’s basketball. Syracuse is a University out of Syracuse, NY that has taken part in Men’s basketball for more than 100 years. Over time this school has become the 5th winningest team in the history of the sport at the collegiate level.
The team has a winning tradition that in ways surpasses the accomplishments of just about any other team. It is a given that this team will be in contention year in and year out. For an incredible 39 straight seasons the team has managed to have a winning season. This has created an atmosphere that welcomes talented players to come and compete as they know that they will be seen by the scouts at the next level.
Much of the success of this team over the last 4 decades can be attributed to coaching legend Jim Boeheim. Boeheim has been coaching the Orangemen for an incredible 34 years. His resume since joining the team has been impeccable. In his 34 seasons he has managed to lead the team to win 20 games or more an incredible 32 times.
]]>
In the process of winning all of these games the team has really had a tremendous amount success in winning tournament and conference championships. Under the reigns of Boeheim the team has managed to win 8 conference championships and five more tournament championships in their conference. This success has materialized into 25 appearances in the NCAA tournament in the 34 years that he has coached the team.
Despite all of the wins and successes under the direction of Boeheim, the team was not able to bring their game to the next level. In 1987 the team made their first championship game under the direction of Boeheim. In this game they played Indiana. Unfortunately, Indiana was just too strong for the team and they lost in their attempt to become National Champions.
The Orangemen battled their way back to the title game in 1996, where they took on Kentucky. Kentucky was a star studded team with many professional prospects. Rick Pitino had the team under control and they took the Championship with a 76-67 victory over the Orangemen. Syracuse would have to wait longer for their chance at a title.
In 2003, the team was led by the superstar freshman Carmelo Anthony. Anthony was impressive during the season, but he really turned it on in the tournament. He, along with sidekicks Gerry McNamara and Hakim Warrick, led the team all the way to the championship game. Anthony played amazing basketball throughout the tournament and helped lead the team past Kansas to win the NCAA Tournament. Carmelo Anthony was named the MVP of the tournament and brought Jim Boeheim and Syracuse a championship.
The team lost Carmelo Anthony and has not since seen the same sort of success. They are still perennial contenders, but the team has not been able to reach the Elite 8 since the 2003 championship. The team now goes by the name “Orange” instead of “Orangemen” in order to incorporate the women’s sports as well.
Choosing to volunteer your time as a youth basketball coach is a big decision. The time investment can be big, but it will pay in dividends. Coaching children can be very rewarding. Seeing the smiles on their little faces and helping them feel good about themselves can have beneficial lifelong effects. It can be very rewarding. If you have not yet decided if you are going to take the job or not, hopefully you will think about your goals and priorities as a team coach and see if they are the right ones.
As a coach, especially of children your priorities should be to have fun, skill development and a safe environment. If your goals are anything other than these, you may need to reevaluate your reasons for being a youth basketball coach. As a coach, you have a lot of power. The way you approach being a coach could have lasting effects on the children. The way you talk to the kids and interact with them can determine how they feel about themselves and the sport of basketball.
]]>
To become a good coach, you need to make sure you have important information about aspects of the game. If you are well informed and ready to leave your kids to a fun and memorable season, then you are in for a time of your life that you will never forget. The kids won’t ever forget either.
Some people decide to coach for the right reasons, such as spending more time with their children or introducing the game to their kids. Other people decide to coach for the wrong reasons, such as winning 1st place, to win a bet or to make sure their children are prepped for a future athletic career. Hopefully you are joining for the right reasons. There is a lot of work to do before the reasons starts and most of it is your sole responsibility.
Eventually you will meet with all of the parents of the children. It’s important to gain their support to have a smooth season. You will interact with all sorts of parents, such as supportive parents, absent parents, opinionated parents and more. You need to learn to work with these different personality types. The one thing that you want to stress to the parents is team work. If everyone is working together, it will really increase the odds of a fun and successful season.
Another very important thing to cover is the rules and terms of the game. You are going to need to understand the rules inside and out if you want to coach. Having a solid understanding of the game is not enough; you need to know the rules by heart. This will help you form a strategy and decide where to place players with certain strengths.
The most fun that you will have all season will be on the court, during practices and of course games. But you have a lot of work to do before you get to this point. Making sure that you are prepared to be a good coach is almost as important as actually doing the job. Do the job right by being prepared and you will be rewarded for life.
A former National Basketball Association (NBA) superstar power-forward believe the Los Angeles Lakers has it take to repeat as NBA champion in the season of the premier professional basketball league in the planet. Karl “Mailman” Malone, a former stalwart of the Utah Jazz believe the Lakers lead by its superstar guard Kobe “Black Mamba” Bryant and veteran coach Phil Jackson will achieve a rare three-peat or three straight championship in the NBA 2010-2011 season. Malone said Bryant, Spanish superstar center Paul Gasol and veteran point-guard Derek Fisher will be too much to handle for the other NBA teams including the reloaded Miami Heat and power-house Boston Celtics. He said the Lakers management also made a great decision when they acquired versatile guard Matt Barnes and reliable point-guard Steve Blaker over the summer. The superstar power-forward said Barnes and Blake are two NBA players who can greatly help the Lakers in both offence and defense in the next NBA season. Malone said the Heat might have acquired three of the top players in the NBA today namely Dwayne “Flash” Wade, Lebron “King” James, and Chris Bosh but their talent and skills will not be enough to topple the Lakers. He said the Heat might have a great NBA season but it will not result into an NBA championship since the Lakers will be too hard to beat in the next NBA season. With regards to the decision of James to leave his former team the Cleveland Cavaliers to play for the Heat, Malone said he respect and understand his decision. Malone said it is the right of James to play where he wants to play and the Cleveland fans and management could not forbid him from doing so. There are as many basketball drills out there as there are basketball coaches, and everyone has their favorite drills. But there are some drills – top basketball drills – that add so much to practice that every coach should have them in their repertoire of basketball knowledge.
Most drills focus on a specific aspect of the game – we have shooting drills, dribbling drills, passing drills, rebounding drills, defense drills. Drills to develop the jump shot, drills to improve the chest pass, drills to teach man to man defense. But top basketball drills go beyond this; they require the use of most, maybe all these skills, and they require much more.
Here’s three reasons why top basketball drills are so important:
1. They simulate game-like situations
Not only are many skills required in order to run the drill properly, these skills need to mesh together – maybe players need to pass, run, receive a pass, pass again immediately, run, receive the pass again and then take the ball in to the hoop, all without traveling (the zipper drill); or fast break down the court to play hard three on two basketball, and then fast break in the opposite direction to play hard two on one basketball (the 3-on-2 to 2-on-2 drill)
]]>
2. They will be controlled and offer excellent teaching opportunities
It’s not a free-for-all, not a pick-up game. The coach is able to stop play to make changes, adjust what is happening, explain why certain movements are being performed and why others won’t work, so players become better players. Not better technicians but better players. Because this is a game simulation, and we don’t deal with how to perfect skills, but how to use them in a game.
3. They are excellent conditioning drills
Most top drills are fast break drills, or have an aspect of fast break to them, and require players to sprint as in game situations and execute various skills as in game situations. Again, remember the focus of these drills – unlike skills drills, these top basketball drills are designed to simulate game play and provide practice in integrating all the skills players have learned into the game. Maybe players will be sprinting to catch up on defense against a fast break, playing hustle defense, rebounding and then fast breaking themselves down the other end of the court (the 2 on 1 fill in); or fighting for a rebound, outletting the ball and filling the far lane on a fast break, so they can shoot and rebound again at the other end of the court (the 11 man drill – my favorite).
Learning skills in stand-alone teaching sessions, or in skill-specific drills, is a necessity. Players can’t learn a basic skill or perfect their techniques in a game – they need the focus and individual attention that comes from skills drills to do this.
But once they have gained some measure of adequacy with the skill, it becomes time to try it out in the game – that is our end goal, after all – and the best step towards that is to use these top basketball drills to prepare your team for game time.
Top basketball drills are great drills for pulling together everything players have learned. They aren’t drills you will use much at the beginning of the pre-season, when you are teaching and reinforcing basic skills. But you will need them later on, as the season grows nearer and as your players’ skills have improved to the point where it is time to teach them how to use those skills in game situations.

Lexington, KY – If No. 2 Kentucky was playing for style points, South Carolina already erased the ultimate one last month: a potential zero in the loss column.
While some of the Wildcats (26-1, 11-1 Southeastern Conference) acknowledge they wouldn’t mind exacting a little payback on Devan Downey and Co. in Thursday’s rematch at Rupp Arena, coach John Calipari says it’s too late in the season and his team is too good to be worrying about style points – and certainly revenge.
NCAA Basketball Betting
He wants a top seed in the NCAA tournament but figures if the wins keep coming – even occasionally ugly ones – that will take care of itself.
“If we win it at a halfcourt bank shot, I’ll be happy,” Calipari said Wednesday.
South Carolina (14-12, 5-7), behind Downey’s 30 points, handed Kentucky its only loss last month with a 68-62 upset in Columbia – the Gamecocks’ first win over a team then nationally ranked No. 1.
Oddsmakers from online sportsbook SPORTSBETTING.com have made Kentucky –16.5 point spread favorites for Thursday’s game against S Carolina. Current College Basketball Public Betting Information shows that 61% of more than 339 bets for this game have been placed on Kentucky –16.5.
Going in, conditions seemed ripe for yet another Kentucky cakewalk. The undefeated record. The return to the top of the polls. Even President Barack Obama’s call that afternoon to congratulate the Wildcats on a fundraising effort for the earthquake victims in Haiti.
]]>
But then, the buzzer sounded. Fans rushed the Colonial Life Arena floor (sparking a ,000 fine), and Kentucky’s record was perfect no more.
“You want to get them back more than anything,” freshman forward Daniel Orton said. “It gets the Adrenalin running.”
Calipari wants his team to feel the Adrenalin but insists the motive shouldn’t be revenge. South Carolina was on a three-game losing streak entering the last meeting with the Wildcats and is on another such streak now.
Kentucky will be heavy favorites yet again, and while Calipari acknowledges another upset is always possible, he’s more concerned about showing progress. That starts with stopping Downey, who leads the SEC in scoring and who managed his typical 30 points against the Wildcats even when missing 21 of his 29 shots.
“Downey’s going to take 30 shots,” Calipari said. “That’s what he’s going to do. Guard him.”
Easier said than done, even for Kentucky’s much-bigger defenders. Orton says he has been practicing defensive against the Wildcats’ own shifty guards, John Wall and Eric Bledsoe. Sometimes, the circus shots just fall in – and that’s what happened with Downey late in the last game.
Orton also says there may have been some hometown officiating down in Columbia.
“Down there we couldn’t even touch him really,” Orton said. “Everything we did to him was a foul. Maybe we’ll have a little more leeway this time.”
Guard DeAndre Liggins says he sees no reason why Kentucky should allow Downey to light up the scoreboard again.
“We’d done a good job, but he’s the leader of that team,” Liggins said. “He takes the most shots. The other guys know that. We’ll have to do a good job of stopping him and making other people beat us.”
Downey’s heroics against Kentucky include one of his career highlights last year at Rupp, when his late bucket helped the Gamecocks pull out a 78-77 victory.
Although Calipari says he got “scared” after watching game tape from last month’s loss, he realizes the Wildcats are rolling right now. After knocking off Vanderbilt in Nashville Saturday, Kentucky’s lead in the SEC East is two games, and it would take a monumental collapse for college basketball’s all-time winningest team to avoid winning the regular season conference championship.
Some pundits have even argued the Wildcats’ No. 1 seed is inevitable, although Calipari insists he doesn’t agree. Still, he says, the focus now is on surviving and improving. His team is young, with three freshman starters – including Wall, who could be a top overall pick in the NBA draft, NBA Picks and figures to push Downey for player of the year honors.
Kentucky’s other two freshmen, Bledsoe and DeMarcus Cousins, have had occasional on-court flare-ups with their tempers. Those are the things that need to get corrected before tournament time, Calipari says.
“We have to be mature,” he said. “We don’t want to put ourselves in a position to lose a national championship opportunity because in a 30-second decision you can’t keep your wits about you.”
The Atlanta Hawks has more reasons to be optimistic in the forthcoming season of the National Basketball Association. The acceptance of Johnson of its offer assured the Hawks of a player who can give them superb offence and defence in the next season of the premier professional basketball league in the planet. As the franchise player of the Hawks the past five years, Johnson had lead his team consistently to the NBA playoffs and made the franchise one of the top young teams in league. The 1966 NCAA Tournament featured the best 22 teams in the nation. These teams would square off in single-elimination play in attempts to become the national champions of NCAA Men’s Basketball. The tournament took place in March, just as it does today. This is the reason why when we talk about NCAA Basketball we talk about “March Madness.”
One team stood out from the rest of the field this season. That team was Texas Western. This team was never famous for having a stunning basketball program, but they employed some recruiting tactics that were unheard of in the NCAA at that time.
While we think of basketball being a sport that features players of all races and skin colors, it was not always this way. Before 1966 there had never been a team that held a starting lineup that consisted only of African American basketball players. In fact, most teams across the nation did not even have African Americans on their team.
The coach for Texas Western decided to shake things up. He went on to recruit numerous black players to come and play for Texas Western. Their team went on to have an amazing season. They even went on to become the first team in history to start a lineup of all black players.
]]>
Texas Western would start things off by playing against Oklahoma City. This matchup would be a relatively easy game for Texas Western. They would come out on top with a 89-74 victory, advancing to take on Cincinnati.
This game against Cincinnati would present the first of many scares for Texas Western in the tournament. They would narrowly escape this game with a two point victory to advance to play Kansas. Kansas would not be any easier to beat though. The Jayhawks pressed Texas Western for all they had and the game would come down to the final seconds. Texas Western managed to walk out with a 1 point victory.
This victory would take Texas Western to the Final Four where they would take on Utah. Utah had one of the best players in the nation, Jerry Chambers. Chambers led all players in scoring for the tournament and would be named the tournament Most Valuable Player that year. Despite his best efforts, he would not be able to take out Texas Western. Texas Western would battle through the game and they would win by a score of 85-78.
This Texas Western team would defy all odds and advanced to take on the Kentucky Wildcats. The Wildcats were led by the legendary Adolph Rupp. Rupp was an amazing coach and was known for getting the most out of his players. However, he was playing against a Texas Western team that was not going to go down easily.
Texas Western managed to pull out a 72-65 victory. This win would give the school their first national championship in their history. This win would make history and paved the way for blacks to become such a huge part of collegiate and professional athletics in the world today.
