In order to become an outstanding athlete the beginner must observe certain training rules. A diet of soft drinks, candy, and hot dogs cannot and will not build a strong body. Foods should consist of green and yellow vegetables, meat and eggs, which are high in protein. Fruits and dairy products, including a minimum of three glasses of milk each day, are important.
A boy needs eight to ten hours of sleep every night. Lack of sleep will affect his speed, stamina and skill, which are essential in athletics. Dates and parties should be reserved for weekends that have no games scheduled.
Smoking and drinking do not mix with athletics. Because smoking accelerates heart action and restricts blood vessels it may affect performance in sports which require endurance. Exhaustion and physical illness are partners of the smoking habit.

Alcohol reduces the power to judge distance and speed. Liquor affects coordination to the point where the drinker cannot even stand or walk.
It has been said by many coaches that the boys who drink or smoke are not dependable. When the going gets tough, they will let the team down.
There will be many times when a boy will be tempted to break training rules. One must have strong character to impose self-discipline when necessary.
Proper attitude, constant practice and strict training produce skill which may offset mere physical power.
Accept coaching
It is an honor to play on a team. A player must remember that he is just a small part of it. It takes five players, all working together, to produce a winning team. When each boy plays his part well, a successful team is born.
The best players make the team. Players may not always agree with the coach’s choice of the starting five, but keep in mind that the coach wants to win as much as anyone. He will not permit personal feelings to interfere with the selection of squad members. It is up to you to prove to the coach that you belong in the line-up.
You can do this by reporting to practice on time and by working hard. Above all, be big enough to take constructive criticism. The desire to improve must come from within. No one can help you unless you have a healthy and respected attitude toward improving yourself.
Work hard to develop two or three dependable shots. Learn to use both hands. The player who uses both hands in shooting, passing and dribbling is more valuable to his team than one who uses only one. Master the defensive skills. A player who works only on offense is only half a player.
A player who learns early in his career that defensive skills are just as important as scoring ability will be going a long way toward eventual success. Work hard on the fundamentals, such as dribbling for speed and control, a variety of shots, good footwork and defensive balance.
There is no place on the squad for boys who use unsportsmanlike tactics. Play hard, but fair! Always play to win! A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins. If victory does not come your way, be big enough to accept defeat! Congratulate your opponents for their good playing, and do not offer alibis.
Accept the officials’ decisions. These men work hard and are above reproach. Blaming officials is a poor excuse for your defeat. Be a gentleman at all times!

So yes, I’m very strict. So I was very surprised that an Internet product was as thorough and complete! I mean this guy could have easily thrown something together – but he didn’t. As most of you know, that is rare in internet products.
On the contrary, the Crossover Machine has very cheesy music. Some of you may think that it’s not a big deal, and that’s fine. I’m just saying, that it can get a little annoying! BUT, it doesn’t get in the way of me learning ankle breaking moves.
Another bad thing about the Crossover Machine is the length of the videos. I mean, I was ready to go after the first lesson. I guess its because, John Ewing is a very thorough teacher. Either way it is a great product and I would recommend it for any basketball player on any level.
I have one player on my team who is very insecure and still growing as a basketball player. So I made sure to show him the video before I showed everyone else. He came to practice two weeks later a BRAND NEW player!

Many might argue that this is an American opinion because the NBA is based in the States but there is no comparison, the NBA rules. Prove it to me, you might respond.
Let’s start with the best players in the world play in the NBA. Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neil, and Dwayne Wade are, without doubt, the top basketball players in the world; there really is no one in the world who can match up with them.

With all the new talent, changing of the game, transformation of the play, there is still one vital aspect that most basketball players completely miss the boat on. Think to yourself what one of the most important aspects of the game is and how can you get better at it. What is one thing that you can do that will improve your defense, ball handling, shooting, rebounding and also improve injury prevention?
The answer, bending your knees!
That’s right, getting lower to the ground. If you do not believe me I want you to try a few things.
Right now I want you to stand up and put your feet together. Next I want you to try to jump with out bending your knees. Most likely you tried it but you still bent your knees. So this time I want you to really try and jump with out bending your knees. If you did it correctly you would find that it is nearly impossible to perform a jump without bending your knees. So what does this mean? Well I will get to that in a second. The next one I want you to try is a defensive slide. I want you to try to slide across your room or wherever you are without bending your knees. Again, if you performed it correctly you will find that it is impossible to do effectively. Now I want you to go back to the first one and bend your knees. So now I want you to bend your knees and jump. You will find that not only did you jump significantly higher but it was also a lot easier and more effective. Now try the same with the defensive slide. Again, you would have found that you can slide laterally a lot easier and effective with your knees bent!
So what’s the point?
The point is that almost every basketball player plays with their legs straight and knees not bent. This plays a major role in all aspects of the game. Because as you demonstrated that it is almost impossible to move and jump with your legs straight. So what does your body do? It does it for you. Let’s look at an example:

Let’s say that you are coming off a screen preparing to catch the ball and shoot but you are playing tall, and not bending your knees. When you catch the ball you will have to dip down (bend your knees) in order for you to jump and shoot the ball. This will take slightly longer that if you already had your knees bent and did not have to dip down to shoot the ball. It may not seem like a big difference, but in the game it could be the difference to someone blocking your shoot and you getting your shoot off faster.
Another great example would be rebounding.
If you are under the basket preparing to rebound a missed shot with your legs straight, you will again have to dip down and bend your knees in order to jump. But if you already had your knees bent you would just simply have to jump straight up while your opponent had to take the time to bend their knees and then jump. Again, this might only be half of a second, but that is all it takes to grab a rebound.
So do you see how important it is to bend your knees and stay low? That’s why almost all shorter players are faster than taller players. Their center of gravity is lower to the ground which provides them with an advantage.
So how do we correct this problem?
Well besides consciously trying to remind yourself to bend your knees all the time, it is all a form of muscle memory. You have to train your body and the muscles that are most used in this position (your gluteus, hamstrings, quadriceps, and calves) I will tell you that this position hurts and most players are very uncomfortable in this position because it is painful. But if you are truly seeking ways to improve your game you should be willing to do whatever it takes to get better.
Here are two drills that I have found that are the most effective in training this position and the muscles that are used.
1. Two ball pounding
Start off with your legs wider than your shoulders. Squat down bending at your knees and not your back. Get two basketballs and try to dribble both of them in between your legs at the same time. Your focus should be at pounding the balls into the ground and staying low. After about 20 seconds this drill will start to hurt but push yourself as much as you.
Try to perform three to six sets of at least 45 seconds of duration.
2. Squat explosive lay ups
Start of right under the basket with a basketball, legs wider than your shoulders. Hold the basketball with your arms straight down by your knees. Squat down bending at the knees and not your back and touch the ball to the ground, as soon as the ball touches the ground explode up and lay the ball up. Perform ten lay-ups in a row and then switch sides. Your focus should be to explode up while keeping your back straight. Perform two to three sets on each side of 10 made lay-ups.
Staying low is one of the most important aspects of basketball and you should focus on bending your knees and keeping your back straight. If you can train your body to stay in this position you will have a huge advantage over your competition.

Basketball has only been popular during the time of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Any basketball history before that is unclear. However, it is injustice not to mention great basketball players in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Take for example the basketball superstar George Mikan. He, a 6’10″ goof, was a sensational inside scorer, rebounder, and shot-blocker. There are 2 basic food groups that a basketball player should eat: protein and carbohydrates.
Proteins – are the building blocks of the body which is responsible for paving the increase of strength and muscle mass through exercise. Protein is found in fish, eggs, dairy products, milk, and meat. There are also kinds of vegetables that are rich in protein. These are leguminous plants or plants which grow on the vine or climbing pea or bean such as peanuts, soya, and asparagus. Protein should supply 10 percent of our energy needs.

Carbohydrates – are essential for the functioning of our brain. Carbohydrates are stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen. They are often found in foods such as rice, bread, potatoes, pasta, fruits, honey, jam, and pulses. Carbohydrates should supply 50 percent of our energy needs however, since a basketball player requires more fuel to keep him in the game, some sports nutritionists require players to have 70 percent carbo diet.
As always, fat is needed but should be minimized.
Before the game…
Eat at least 1 hour before the game. This gives the body ample time to digest the food before using it during the game. It is suggested that the player should eat lots of carbohydrates to store energy.
During the game…
Players aren’t often seen eating during the game but most people don’t know about this: eating a bananna during the game helps players to replenish lost energy quickly. Regularly drinking fluid during the game helps the player to bring back the water he has lost from the game.
After the game…
After the game, the player should eat protein, then carbohydrates. This is because protein helps facilitates carbohydrate to replenish the storage chemical of the cell of the body called glycogen. Glycogen stores glucose, an important component in metabolism. Without these two, the body won’t regain the energy that is lost from the previous game and will contribute to mental and physical fatigue.
Take note that protein and carbohydrates aren’t the only requirements of a player. He should also exercise to help keep his body healthy and fit.
Becoming a great basketball player takes a lot of discipline, hard-work, practice, and patience. No one is born a elite basketball player. All the pros, from Magic Johnson to Larry Bird had to do a lot of work to get to where they’re at. With basketball more popular than ever before, the competition to play in high-school, to earn a college scholarship, or to play professional is intense.

You can’t forget the importance of intelligence for a great basketball player. The great ones know how to react to a defender, to a teammate, or to a coach. You can develop basketball intelligence through watching basketball games on TV, discussions with coaches, reviewing films, talking to older player, and through just playing a lot of basketball.
There are a few other areas that are often forgotten when it comes to being a complete basketball player. You must take care of your body. This means get a lot of sleep, have correct nutrition, and utilize recovery workouts.
